Stakeholders In Hospital Bass
As mentioned previously, there are specific stakeholders that are involved within the Albacore community and Hospital Bass. First, there are the patients, whose interests are to be treated with the best possible care by the hospital staff. Therefore, it is important to understand that the patients are considered to be the primary stakeholders (Community Toolbox, n.d.). Without patients Hospital Bass would not exist because patients create revenue, which allow hospitals to stay open. The interests of the patients are the number one concern for Hospital Bass. The patients’ interests include receiving high quality of care in a timely manner as well as having both Spanish and English speaking healthcare staff members. Some examples of healthcare laws that will be broken are Section 1557, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability (U.S Department of Health and Human Services, n.d.). There is also medical malpractice that can affect the physicians as well as Hospital Bass. Dealing with lawsuits such as malpractice, negligence and discrimination can cost hospital hundreds to millions of dollars in lawsuits. Therefore, the directors and CEO have to decide what the safest and cheapest route is to move towards. Lastly, they are also other financial ramifications and concerns that can occur, such as going over hospital budget, which can cause employees to lose their jobs or cause a decrease in medical supplies and technology, affecting overall patient care. In other words, Hospital Bass could potentially meet all the needs of their patients and hospital staff without going over budget. Unfortunately, they do not have the means to do so financially. These risks contain discrimination against the employees as well as and medical malpractice, which will affect the patients. These issues relate to the conflicting values between the stakeholders because whichever way the administration turns, either the patients or the employees will be affected by the decision. For example, not hiring more Spanish-speak employees will affect patient quality of care. Patients may become sick, injured, or die due to the lack of Spanish healthcare providers. This will cause medical malpractice suits to be filed against the physicians and the hospital. Next, there is the concern of employee layoffs. In other words, the administration has to value their patients’ concerns and hire new employees who are bilingual. Unfortunately, the employees who are not bilingual and are not protected by the hospital’s union may have to be let go. This value conflict will cause a great deal of lawsuits pertaining to discrimination. Either way, whatever path the directors and CEO decide to take at Hospital Bass could lead to a potential lawsuit. Therefore, a plan needs to be set in place and the best possible plan needs to be implemented in order to avoid a type of lawsuit against the
