Stand and Deliver Synopsis
Stand and Deliver is an American film based on the true story of high school math teacher, Jaime Escalante. The story is about how Jaime Escalante changes the system and challenges the students to a higher level of excellence. The story begins from the first day Jaime Escalante, or later on in the film called Kimo by his students, teach. He is not well liked by students, receiving numerous taunts and threats. On the next day, he came with apples and handed out the apples to the students that are already cut by him. Then he asked the students how much apple they have got. The first method he used to teach was kind of success, so on the following days, he used another innovative method such as props and humor to illustrate abstract concepts of math and convey the necessity of math in everyday lives to teach so his students will enjoy the learning process with him and win over the attention of the students. While
Kimo teaches math 1A, he realized that his students are capable of more than the expectations set forth by the school board. Despite the skepticism of other teachers, who feel that "you can't teach logarithms to illiterates", Escalante nonetheless develops a program in which the his students can rise to take AP Calculus by their senior year.
This intense math program requires that students take summer classes, including
Saturdays, from 7 to 12, tasking for even the most devoted and committed students.
While other students spent their summers "barefoot and pregnant", these math enthusiasts were learning complex theorems and formulas. Then, he develops a program in which his students can rise to take AP Calculus by their senior year. With
Kimo’s help, the students soon find the courage to separate from society’s expectations of failure and rise to the standard to which Kimo holds them to, a standard of success.
