PENDAHULUAN

Starbucks adalah salah satu dari kedai kopi waralaba yang berasal dari Amerika Serikat. Starbucks sendiri bermarkas di Seattle, Washington. Starbucks pertama kali didirikan di Seattle’s Pike Place Market yang berlokasi di Seattle, Washington (Amerika Serikat) pada tahun 1971. Saat ini, Starbucks merupakan kedai kopi terbesar di dunia dengan 15.012 kedai di 44 negara. Salah satunya adalah Indonesia. Keberadaan kafe Starbucks di Indonesia juga tidak lepas dari peran PT. Mitra Adi Perkasa (MAP) Tbk yang merupakan perusahaan ritel yang memegang beberapa hak waralaba dari Sogo, Seibu, Debenhams, Converse, Reebok, Nike, Zara, Kinokuniya, Krispy Kreme, dan Burger King, dan lainnya. Hak waralaba Starbucks sendiri diberikan pada PT. Mitra Adi Perkasa (MAP) Tbk pada tahun 2002. Pada saat itu, PT. Mitra Adi Perkasa mengirimkan seorang ahli hospitality yang berpengalaman, Anthony Cottan bersama tim 8 dari Jakarta untuk belajar selama 3 bulan di Seattle sebelum membuka kedai Starbucks pertama di Indonesia. Untuk lebih memaksimalkan kinerja Starbucks, PT. Mitra Adi Perkasa membentuk sebuah anak perusahaan yang bernama PT. Sari Coffee. PT. Sari Coffee inilah yang mengurus manajemen Starbucks Indonesia. Pada tanggal 20 Mei 2002, kedai kopi Starbucks pertama di Indonesia dibuka di Plaza Indonesia, Jakarta. Saat ini, Starbucks sudah memiliki 72 kedai kopi yang tersebar di beberapa kota besar seperti Jakarta, Bandung, Medan, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Balikpapan, dan Bali. Seiring dengan pesatnya perkembangan Starbucks di Indonesia, ribuan kedai kopi pun mulai saling bersaing mulai dari kedai kopi asing seperti Gloria Jean’s Coffee (Kanada), Dome (Australia), dan The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (Amerika Serikat) sampai kedai kopi lokal seperti Café Excelso (Grup Kapal Api), Tator Café, Café Rollaas (PTPN XII), dan masih banyak lagi. Untuk saat ini, Starbucks merupakan kedai kopi besar yang bersaing ketat dengan pemain lokal yaitu Café Excelso.
