kindness, honesty, love to learn, possessing empathy and compassion for others, communicating, and excellent time management skills.
• I believe that the core of nursing is knowledge, compassionate, and honesty. Therefore the focus of nursing is to focus on the patients needs, safety. a. QSEN Competencies
i. The whole program has taught me to focus on patient-centered care in every clinical, lab, and exam. Patient centered care basically focuses on the patients needs and has helped me guide the care I give focused on the patients needs. Throughout clinical patient center care has been priority. Being assigned to a patient during my clinical rotation has shown me all the elements that into providing basic care. ii. I have learned the importance of teamwork and collaboration throughout the program and very much enjoyed it. This was seen in group projects, clinical settings, and class settings. My last semester has been full of teamwork projects. For example our community class we have been working with our clinical groups to do three projects. We have learned to split parts of projects, come together, collaborate and teach each other as well as putting the projects together. This has taught me to trust my peers and clinical leaders. iii. Evidence-Based Practice is very important guiding safe and efficient care. The importance of evidence-based practice was stressed to us during the first week of nursing school. I feel like our research class played a huge role in focusing on this. We had to do research and write a few essays, do a few assignments, and do a project that were all focused on evidence based practice. iv. Quality improvement drives the health care system. Quality improvement is necessary for bettering care. This is carried out by evidence-based practice. For example turning your patient every 2 hours to decrease the chance for pressure ulcers during hospital stay. This helps with reducing health care cost and medical supplies as well keeping the patient safe and comfortable.
v. As we all know safety is very crucial and important everyday in nursing no matter if you’re in lab, clinical rotation, at a preceptor ship, or even trying to answer a question, think safety! It was stressed the first day of nursing school and still is. When I thought of safety I always thought patient safety. Yes, that’s extremely important but I have learned your safety as a nurse is just as much important. We have practice safety every semester from beginning to end. Some examples of safety include first and foremost hand washing, it is vital to always wash your hands before and after entering any patients room. We also learned the (6) rights of medication administration, identifying the patient with two patient identifiers, risk fall precautions, sterile procedures, as well as following the HIPPA Law and keeping things confidential. vi. Informatics in nursing has become very important. Nurses have been using electronic health records and are responsible for charting patient information to promote a higher level of care. Electronic health records have made it easier and safer for nurses to enter data. For example decreasing chances of errors and easily accessible for team members to access information needed.
b. AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice
i. My liberal education courses for Baccalaureate generalist nursing practice include science and art. Which include biology, psychology, history, and history. Within these courses psychology and biology have shaped my nursing knowledge. Psychology has helped me better understand behaviors, and critically think when caring for patients.
ii.
In the program, I have learned in order to be a successful leader, you must be fair in making decisions as well as being professional at all times. This is what I learned in leadership class. We also learned about delegation. Delegation plays an important role and differentiates a good and bad leader. I did a case study in Leadership, which included me as a nurse delegating to a LPN and CNA. This showed me the importance to ensure safety and competency of the whole health care team. iii. Throughout nursing school I feel that every course has incorporated evidenced-based practice when teaching about nursing. In research class we did lots of research and focused on critiquing articles. Our professor taught us the difference between qualitative and quantitative and we were assigned assignments every week to help us better understand. iv. Nursing during this time mostly relies on technology to provide fast, safe care. During my clinical rotations I have learned about different electronic charting systems and observed the organization and privacy of the information. I also experienced paper charting at a facility my first semester. I realized it was easily accessible because you didn’t need to key in username and passwords, but it was very difficult to read and I can see lots of mistakes being made. The files in the paper charting were also always disorganized and hard to find something fast information when you needed it. Overall, every healthcare facility that I did my rotations at has been using electronic records and I feel that it has helped maintain HIPPA and provide fast efficient
care.
v. In my leadership class the financial elements involving healthcare financing and reimbursement was highly stressed. In the course I have learned about budgets, and material/equipment and how its very important. Health care policies are what guide nurses. For instance every hospital has their own policies nurses have to go by. Through out the program I had many experiences with different policies because of clinical rotations. During school our text book was basically our health care policy and we went by what the book said. vi. Communication and collaboration are essential components in patient care. Honestly I don’t think its possible to be successful to achieve success and provide care without communication and collaboration with your health care team. Therefore being able to communicate with peers, and the health care team will help provide safe patient care. An example of the importance of proper communication is patient handoff. During clinical we got to observe the nurse provide information to the oncoming nurse about the patient and inform the nurse on everything that went on during her shift. This saved so much time for the nurse and puts everyone on the same page. vii. It is the nurses’ responsibility to help teach others about preventions and ways to maintain a good health. I feel like our community course provides an excellent example for this. During our clinical time in the community I got to take patients blood pressure and BMI’s. I got to teach patients about health risks associated with it, as well as diabetes, hypertension, and signs of stroke. I also recommended patients to go in for physicals or see their doctors who haven’t been in a long time. This year we also are working on a project for the incredible baby shower. My group and I will be teaching “no child left wet behind”. Which include teaching about different diapers, proper diaper changing, rashes, and much more. This will teach future parents and hopefully be very beneficial. viii. Being professional is very important especially when holding a BSN degree. This program is set to push us to professional always, and I think it has done a wonderful job. This was especially emphasized in our professional, and leadership course. I have learned to respect everyone around me and treat him or her the way I would want to be treated. I have learned to respect and care for patients just the way I would want someone to treat my loved ones. I believe it is very important to study different cultures as we are in a very diverse community, even if you don’t know about someone’s culture it never hurts to ask. During one of my clinical rotations there was a patient who was Muslim and I knew they do not eat anything with pork products. The patient was given gello, which I knew contained gelatin. I told the nurse she said “its okay he had it before”. I didn’t think it was right. Therefore while I gave the patient his food, I informed him of the product that may be in the gello. He asked if we could call the cafeteria to make sure. We did and they said it does include gelatin and he shouldn’t have it. It is my goal as a nurse to minimize social injustice in the clinical settings and expand my knowledge about different cultures. ix. The BSN program has given me the knowledge and hand on skills to be confident to practice as a registered nurse. I have been able to take away skills we learned in lab and clinical for example basic self care, head to toe assessments, vitals, blood transfusions, IVs, wound care, safe transportation, port of cath, urinary catheters, sterile techniques, and much more. The program has shaped me in a way that I wasn’t sure of starting the program. I have learned to be an advocate for my patients and keep them safe and well cared of.
