At a recent NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) convention, educators finally began taking steps to insure that athletes receive an education in something besides their chosen sport. One such step was requiring that schools make public their institutions graduation rate among athletes and compare this with the rate for the student body as a whole. While this may be admirable, it still is not enough to ensure “student athletes” to graduate without an education adequate for anything but an athletic career. [Petina]…
Kristina Navarro’s journal article, “An Examination of the Alignment of Student-Athlete’s Undergraduate Major Choices & Career Field Aspirations in Life After Sports” examines the unique situations collegiate student-athletes(SA) navigate while working toward a degree and planning for their future. Driven by the individuality emphasis of Mark Savickas’ career construction theory, a qualitative approach was employed to capture each SA participants’ stories and tales. Few research studies exist that focuses solely on the SA population and Navarro’s research was aimed at understanding the impact of life experiences on choosing a major and how the chosen major lines up with their career aspirations (Navarro, 2015). The 29 voluntary participants…

Sports’ marketing is becoming more readily known as the vehicle that drives the sports business to success. It is “orientated toward consumers and about thinking, deciding and acting in terms of the final consumer. You have to know who your consumers are, what they want and need and use this effectively as a sports marketer orientating the drive more toward the market, not the product (Sports Marketing: The motor that drives the sports business (2005)). There are four crucial elements that a sports marketer must consider when positioning their product to the needs and wants of the consumer. The four elements are emotion, experience, engagement and entertainment. The following report aims to show through various studies the importance of the four E’s in a marketing perspective, the way in which the four E’s are used at an organizational level in sports marketing and finally how this connects and effects the consumer of the product or sport.…
College athletes should get the opportunity to major in their sport so they can improve their ability and knowledge of the sport that they play. Also athletes might find studying their sport more enjoyable and they will be motivated to learn. For example, students who go to college to study music or theater are no different then a student athlete because they both get to do something they interested in. Except some college athletes feel like school is something they have to do just to keep their scholarship. But if they had sports major’s athletes will see this as a way to get better at something they love to…
My interest in studying sport science was first aroused during my first year of studying GCSE PE which then led to studying PE at A-Level. I achieved a very high grade at GCSE made me very keen to build on my interest in PE. I believe a degree in Sport Science is the first step in that direction as it will teach me the methodological and systematic approach required to improve physical and mental performance at all levels of participation. I am attracted by the way it encourages us to be analytical of…
College athletes participate in special promotions as well as sell merchandise. During practicing, they devote innumerable hours. Athletes furthermore devote time and attention to excel for their subjects in before college, all while striving to get accepted into the college they prefer. “Division II currently requires 16 core courses… Division II currently requires a minimum SAT score of 820 or an ACT sum score of 68” (NCAA 1). Acquired from the evidence you can consider the requirements for college athletes are absolutely challenging.…
The realm of athletic training is an interesting field. Athletic trainers have a unique opportunity to not only to evaluate injuries, prevent injuries, and providing immediate health care, but they are also able to invest and encourage their athletes or patients they are caring for. Having the chance to see athletes at their lowest point in their career and being able to build them back to physical health and having a better self-efficacy is what brings me the most joy.…
During my off season from soccer, I plan to be a sports commentator for ESPN or to open up my own personal training business. This will help me to make more money and allow me to continue to work after I retire from professional soccer. I would like to eventually be asked to commentate for the women’s FIFA world cup. If I do not follow through with my main plan because of injury or loss of interest, I would like to go to college solely for a degree in business and sports education. After graduating from college, I would open up a full time personal training business for soccer teams. There I would be able to teach many young players the game of soccer and help them to perfect their…

Colleges come in all different shapes and sizes. Some are well known with thousands of students, others are more humble with a few hundred students. But almost every college has one thing in common and that’s sports. Nearly all the colleges across america have sports teams. However, there are varying opinions on the role sports play in a student's college life. Some agree that sports are extremely important because they earn money for the school and attract the attention of students. Others think that people are forgetting the academics of the school letting students who play on sports teams get by with just their athletic ability. But most agree with both sides of the argument that both sports and academics are key parts to a student and the college's success.…

Many high school athletes will tell you that they need their sport in order to get a good scholarship to a college. Many high school athletes are able to get sport scholarships. In fact, the sport that tends to get the most scholarships is hockey, which is followed by baseball, and then football. Students who receive a scholarship often have better professions due to a better education education than those who don’t. For this reason, sports are undeniably valuable to students.…
Although colleges benefit more from the relationship, the only route for athletes is through the university. By having college sports, a university is able to market that as a reason to come to the universities as well as a way to make money. On the other hand, athletes have the chance to study and broaden their knowledge; practice and play against the best athletes; access to the best coaches and equipment; as well as the ability to make a name for his or herself. If one truly desires to take his or her career to the next level, the athlete needs a university; therefore, the exchange of playing for free tuition is an equal one. Not to mention that the students who don’t plan to play the sport on the next level receive a free education as well. Just as Toma suggest, sports and college have a positive relationship, but reforms need to be…
By growing up in a house of athletes, I always was involved in some type of sport. Whether it be tennis, baseball, football, or even a game of amateur soccer, I was just so grateful to be away from school work. As I still wander the halls of Northwestern, I often reflect back on my life, and how far I’ve come to this point that I’m at today. I can say that my work ethic never caught up until my junior year. That’s when “life” really dawned on me.…
