An uncertain future may inject fear into the minds of some people. When it comes to me, I have learned that the uncertainty of the future means that it offers opportunities to discover something about which I am passionate. In the beginning, I expected to be a clinical pharmacist at a hospital, since I had completed my pharmacy degree with that focus. Nevertheless, the food and beverage industry has captivated my interest enough for me to pursue a career in it, especially as related to the innovation and development of functional foods.

During the comprehensive review process about breast cancer, I found intriguing articles discussing several studies with conflicting outcomes on the correlation between soy isoflavones and breast cancer. From the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) Foods That Fight Cancer™ review, AICR states that soy foods do not increase breast cancer risk, and are safe for survivors of breast cancer in moderate amounts. In some cases, research found that soy consumption actually lowers breast cancer risk, and links it to a decrease in breast cancer recurrence. While soy’s potential effects on health remain an active area of investigation, these articles have encouraged me to learn about functional foods, which play a role in promoting optimal health and reducing the risk of disease.
