In the novel, Station Eleven by Elizabeth St. John Mandel, the author decided to start the book by introducing the readers to Arthur Leander, who is one of the main characters. Arthur Leander who was performing as King Lear in Shakespeare's play. As he was performing something really tragic happened to him, he had a heart attack on stage. After the death of Arthur Leander, there was a Georgia Flu outbreak that was spreading all over the world. A disease known as the flu pandemic has spread quickly causing many people to died.
After the collapse the Traveling Symphony, who were a theatre troupe that traveled and performed music and Shakespeare plays. Their slogan is survival is insufficient, life should not only be about surviving, but living life to the fullest. Kirsten Raymonde, who was just a little girl when she witnessed Arthur Leander die, she was an actor in the play the night Arthur died. Kirsten joins the Symphony after her brother dies, she believes that art is truly the best way to live instead of surviving. As the author Mandel does flashbacks throughout the novel to help the readers better understand who Arthur Leander really was as a character. The Symphony is searching for their long lost friends, that were seperated from them years ago. They keep on searching for their friends when they encounter a Museum of Civilization, where a collection of old world artifacts that survivors had found and preserved. When Kirsten and her friends come in contact with the Prophet it put them in danger. The Prophet was supposed to meet with the Traveling Symphony at Severn City, but they never got the chance to meet them because they were always traveling from one place to another. So they never actually got to see the Traveling Symphony
