LGBT, is an acronym meaning Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transvestite. These four different groups have been harassed and generalized day in and day out, just due to the fact that they’re different. Actors, celebrities, and politicians around the world have stood up for gay rights, on top of the astounding civilian population that has spoken up about the touchy subject. It doesn’t take much to speak up about the subject, protests, signs, posts on twitter, yelling it from a rooftop, just doing something to speak up about the matter, it’s been displayed in movies, songs and everything from a to z. There’s one song I would like to put the spotlight on specifically. It has amazingly deep lyrics that have rich meaning. The song is called Shades of …show more content…
Purple, by Bye June.
Shades of Purple by Bye June was released in 2012. Before the sexual revolution of the 1960s, the amount of people standing up for the LGBT was next to zero. Fifty years later songs are released in a blink of an eye.
Shades of Purple is a perfect example. It conveys the subject perfectly, while still keeping it catchy enough to listen any time of the day. Within seconds of playing the song, most people would realize what its about, and the point behind the lyrics themself. Approximately thirty percent of all completed suicides have been related to sexual identity issues. Children apart of the gay, bisexual, lesbian or transgendered identity groups report being five times as more likely to miss school because they feel unsafe after being bullied due to their sexual orientation. Approximately one fourth of all students from elementary school to high school are the victims of bullying and harassment just because of the fact that they’re different. Children should miss school because they like someone of the same sex as them. “They met on his best friend’s front porch. They talked till the sun went up”
(Bye June 2012) a lyric from Shades of Purple. This two sentence line is extremely critical. It explains and furthermore expresses the fact that homosexuals can meet each other the exact same way as heterosexuals. They meet the same way, and they love each other the
same way. How could such a horrible abomination, that about 34% of the US alone thinks is unnatural, have a bringing together in such a common normal way.
“That his body was a prison of his own mind” (Bye June 2012) This lyric sends an profoundly deep message. To relate to your own mind as a prison, is horrible. For the sole reason of being different, and having feelings for someone as the same sex as you, he became a prisoner of his own thoughts. People must be heard, we were given the ability to talk and think for ourselves for a reason. He isn’t having this feeling just because he’s homosexual, he’s having this feeling because of the repercussions of him speaking his mind,
which is something not everyone has to worry about.
The song Shades of Purple isn’t all good lyrics and a catchy tune, it expresses something more, instead of a sign, that will eventually get blown away in the wind, this song will be heard, for the LGBT, and for its supporters, for as long as it takes until people realize and understand that the 34% has some rethinking they need to do.It has concrete lyrics that do more than just justify the life style of anyone apart of LGBT, but make them feel safe, and not alone.
