Stereotyping all over the world. The pros and cons of stereotyping.

Stereotyping is a controversy today all over the world. Stereotyping is also extremely common and is heard everyday. Although there are bad points to stereotyping, there are also some good points in stereotyping. The Eric Berne's Article "Can People Be Judged by Their Appearance?" and the film Breakfast Club will be used for resources and examples. Understanding other people's emotions or feelings because that is just the way they act can be used as a good thing for stereotyping, but when used incorrectly the results can turn out horribly.

Stereotyping can be used as an advantage because when working with a workforce, customers or anyone can allow you to understand the person's personality. This is usually based on what kind of ethnicity the person is. You can forgive a person if he is bitter or stubborn because this is just the way they act or rose in their childhood. Although Berne's point of view is slightly different (body descriptions instead of ethnicity) his article describes,

"Nevertheless, it is important for the individual to know about these types, so that he can have an inkling of what to expect from those around him." Paragraph 15

Using these skills, you can be a more friendlier and understanding employee to your fellow workers.

When being a minority or a majority of ethnicities, you can be stereotyped or stereotype others. If you can avoid these stereotypes, then you can surprise them or even make more friends without being stereotyped against. One bad stereotype is Asians and driving, many people stereotype against Asians on the road because they do not drive well. Not every Asian drives horribly (although a majority does), so if you can overcome that statement, then other people cannot stereotype against you or your ethnic group. You also must know what is stereotyped against you in order for you to not look or act ignorant.

When stereotyping others is bad enough already, stereotyping others and being wrong makes you look bad and ignorant at the same time. People should not stereotype because it can be wrong and not always true. In the film Breakfast Club, each member of the group had a stereotypical name, when all of the students told the truth about each other, they all turned out to be the same. Every person can change to whoever they want to be but the change may be difficult. Stereotyping is wrong because it makes a statement about everyone included in that ethnicity or group.

Stereotyping can be looked at being racist because it is basically the same thing as racism, stating something that maybe un-true about that person, his/her culture or ethnicity. When someone hears you make these types of comments, it can end up in an even worst result. When working or in the public, these types of comments can get you fired or even killed. People may think of you as a "racist" or the outcome can be permanent.

Stereotyping is a huge controversy in this world because people are either too stubborn or ignorant to learn about other people or their cultures. Stereotyping is very common and can be found in everyday conversations. People may not even know that they are making stereotypical comments. Stereotyping can be used positively by understanding people better but should be limited because it might result into something bad. Stereotyping in the long run ends up being wrong because anyone can always change.

I think stereotyping is definitely for ignorant people because a person who would want to know about other people's ethnicity or culture would not make stereotypical comments until he/she thinks twice about what he/she is about to say. I would know about stereotyping because I am a minority and has grown up in a white neighborhood all my life. I have been discriminated and discriminated others also. Stereotyping is huge especially in America because America is a huge melting pot of all the ethnicities. In almost everything, I can find something about stereotyping or racism. Stereotyping is this huge in America, one movie that has to do with stereotyping is the movie Gangs of New York because the Irish coming off the boats are the same types of people that already live in America but consider themselves as "American". New York was a huge melting pot and many racist and stereotypical comments were made that time because people were ignorant. They never even saw an African American before and assumed that he is the devil. Why can't we all just get along?
