Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is the beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” In an effective team everyone collaborates to become successful. Joshua Davis the author of “La Vida Robot” and Walter Isaacson, author of an excerpt from Steve Jobs share similar views on what makes an effective team. Both authors believe an effective team consists of individuals who have distinctive and noteworthy skills that lead the team to success.
In “La Vida Robot,” Davis describes the different skills each student in the team has, making the team successful. Davis starts by describing Lorenzo as he states,
“Lorenzo had grown up rebuilding car engines with his brother and cousin. Now he was ready to build something on his own.” Lorenzo’s expertise in mechanics is important because it makes him a valuable member of the team. In addition, Davis describes
Christian as the brains of the team. Christian’s intelligence is shown in the first meeting of the team when he states, “We should use glass flotation foam.”Christian suggests a plan for building the robot giving him a role as the engineer of the group. Davis also describes
Oscar as the “born leader” of the group. Oscar is able to motivate others and his leadership helps the team as he gets the money to buy the materials for the robot.
Furthermore, Davis mentions Luis Aranda who is responsible for picking up the materials of the robot. A conversation with Christian and Lorenzo resulted in “Luis going to a hardware store to buy a PVC pipe.” This shows Luis had the role of the errand boy and their team succeeded with everyone working together to defeat the MIT champions in a robotics competition.
Similar to Davis, Isaacson emphasizes on the different personalities and expertise that lead a team to success. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak impacted technology with their expertise, which came from the lessons they each learned from

The ideas and ideals the Steve Jobs brings to the table are absolutely astonishing. I mean, just hearing what he had to say literally made me feel as if there were nothing in the world I couldn’t do. I completely agree with what he says. “Remembering that I’ll be dead soon was is the most important tool I have ever encountered.”(Jobs, 2005). Knowing the fact that we all have an hourglass above our heads is extremely important when trying to become something in a short period of time. It means you better get off your behind and do something otherwise you will get that opportunity ever again. Those that only come once in a lifetime. We all have done this at some point in our lives. That is procrastinate when you are asked to do something. What he says really clicks with me and may for hundreds of thousands of people.…

Opportunities and luck tie into some of the greatest success stories. To find a great deal of opportunities where there is none is a true outlier; someone who has enough ambition to proceed in the force of an opportunity. Gladwell uses Bill Gates to demonstrate series of remarkable opportunities. Gates had many opportunities that led him to be one of the most successful people of all time. His first opportunity was he was fortunate to attend Lakeside, a private school, which was the only middle school known with a computer. He experienced programming starting his eighth grade year. He had that opportunity because the mothers formed a computer club, which provided a computer, giving him early access to the flourishing technology era. The computer time was expensive, so the Mother’s club put up Three-thousand dollars to support the fees, which led to another opportunity. When they spent that money, one of the founders of C-cubed, a company that allowed accessing to computers, needed someone to test out the company’s software in trade of free computer time; Gates accepted. Unfortunately C-cubed eventually went bankrupt, but that didn’t set him of the path of his success. Gates fell into the place of ISI (Information Sciences Inc.), which allowed him to work on a piece of software in exchange of free computer time. He estimated twenty or thirty hours of computer time a…

There were bots managing an arcade Clint had built, and worker bots were, of course, working on a new facility in which bots could go during night or as they know it, “when the big bulb above goes out.” Each robot had a purpose, and they all depended on each other.…

Having the ability to lead others is essential in today’s world. For approximately the past two years, I have been the team captain of my high school’s robotics team, the Combustible Lemons. The team has competed in a number of regional, state, and international under my leadership. However, our robotics team wishes to be well rounded, so we do more than just build robots; therefore, we also commit ourselves to service for our community locally and abroad. Although being a leader can sometimes be difficult, I find great pleasure in being one because it is challenging, it is useful, and it is influential.…

Steve Jobs lived a life unparalleled by the common man. Raising some of the most successful corporations from the ground up, being at the forefront of the technological revolution, and battling pancreatic cancer for a number of years were all things that he succeeded in accomplishing throughout his 56 years of life. He also happened to deliver a brilliant commencement address to one of the finest academic institutions in the world. Any college graduate in the audience that sunny afternoon at Stanford University was in for a treat. The irony behind the whole situation was the fact that Steve Jobs himself, although arguably one of the most successful men of the 21st century, never graduated college. “…this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation”, Jobs confesses immediately after he begins speaking. Throughout the speech, the experiences he shares with the audience all share a common theme; the pursuit of happiness will lead you down the road of success if you follow your intuition and do what makes you truly happy. He conveys this message with the use of a cause and effect analysis, contrast, and personal anecdotes.…
