    Women in the Odessey

One role of women in ancient Greek culture as portrayed in The Odyssey is subservient to men. For example, Calypso keeps Odysseus on her island. However, Zeus tells her to let him go, as Hermes declares, “Now Zeus commands you to send him off with all good speed” (5: 156. 125). She responds by protesting that Zeus keeps all the mortal women he wants. However, Calypso listens to Zeus and releases Odysseus. Calypso clearly wants Odysseus to stay, yet she still lets him go, on the orders of Zeus. Even though she is correct in saying the gods are unfair, Calypso must obey Zeus because he is a god. Earlier in the story, we hear Telemachus arguing with the suitors. He tells them he will find news of Odysseus. He also proclaims, “[I will] give my mother to another husband” after he has found news of his father (2: 100. 248). The phrasing, “give my mother,” implies that it is Telemachus’s choice not Penelope’s choice who and when she will marry. Despite the fact Penelope is older; she has to listen to Telemachus, since he is the man of the house. Later in the story, Telemachus again asserts his authority in the hall by saying, “go back to your quarters. Tend to your own tasks, /the distaff and the loom, and keep the women/working hard as well” (21: 435. 390-392) Not only does it show Telemachus’s power; it also shows the job of a woman, which is to spin in their free time. In addition, while the men are feasting and enjoying themselves, the women have to keep working. The women have…

Did you know that they don’t test on humans because that would be bad if they did because those humans might die. That's why we shouldn't test on animals because they die too and there human nature and the world change by killing or testing them.…

Yes we need to test our drugs and surgical stuff on something so that humans do not have to suffer but the way that they are killed is inhumane and wrong. Pigs have done nothing to deserve to die and suffer for our own selfish needs. I believe it is inhumane to kill them and use them the way that we do and we should find another way to test on them. Even though we need to test on something to help us. I think there should be another way to make this happen rather than kill them and watch them…

Animal Testing is so painful for animals and they don't understand why they're being put through this pain. It is also very inhumane and morally offensive. Animal testing is cruel and an inhumane way to torture animals for mankind's own benefit. There have been millions of animals that have suffered a vicious, painful death in the name of research. Lastly there are alternatives to Animal Testing such as computer modeling, As science continues to transform our world beyond what we know, and technology continues to transform and expand upon what we depend on. Right now, millions of mice, rats, rabbits, cats, dogs, and other animals are locked inside cold, barren cages in laboratories across the country. “For days they languish in pain, ache with loneliness and long to roam free and use their minds” (PETA). These animals come from a wide variety of places such as city pounds, zoos, commercial breeders, and even circuses. Did you know that around the world these animals are being used to test products ranging from shampoo to new cancer drugs? In fact almost every medical treatment that you use has been tested on animals. For instance, animals were used to develop anesthetics (AnimalPort). All they can do is sit and wait in fear of the next terrifying and painful procedure that will be performed on them. “The stress, sterility and boredom causes some animals to develop neurotic behaviors such incessantly spinning in circles, rocking back and forth and even pulling out their own hair and biting their own skin” (PETA). Believe it or not animal testing is not required by law, animal testing is only done to protect companies from consumer lawsuits (Zoomshare). Animal testing…

Animal testing on cosmetics should be banned. People are put in jail all the time for abusing their pets, but people are never put in jail for inhumane testing of cosmetics and other pharmaceuticals on these same animals. I have done a lot of research on animal testing and methods we can use that are more effective and don’t use animals through high school in my free time because of curiosity, so I know a lot of random facts about the harmful nature of this and alternative methods. Animals are being tortured to “help” make better medicine and, the majority of the time does not affect people the same way as animals. Animal testing is inhumane and ineffective the majority of the time, it should be banned.…

To test cosmetics, household cleaners and other consumer products hundreds of thousands of animals are poisoned, blinded and killed every year by cruel corporations. In my opinion we should not even be doing this at all, it is very wrong.Thousands of animals are killed everyday due to this torture. Animals have feelings too. Toothpaste is even tested on animals. It’s ridiculous. According to the human society, registration of a single pesticide requires more than 50 experiments and the use of 12,000 animals. The animals are tested for 2 years.…

Cosmetic tests performed on animals include dropping chemicals in the animal’s eyes. Animal cruelty is when someone hurts an animal or does not care for an animal responsibly. Animal testing is basically that, so, technically, animal testing is animal abuse. Animals should not be experimented on because the testing is somewhat like torture and they are innocent. Although huge developments have been made with animal testing, about 90% of successful animal testing is not successful when used on humans.…

Since 2002, over 1 million animals that the USDA collects numbers on, which includes dogs, cats, sheep, hamsters, guinea pigs, and primates, have been tested on. Since then, that number has increased to approximately 1.4 million. This excludes all rats and hamsters used in testing, which normally make up 90% of testing. This percentage, however, remains only as an estimate because US laws do not require scientists to record how many rats, birds, and mice are used. Cages for theses animals are not exactly up to standards either. Hamsters, rats, and mice tend to live in plastic boxes, approximately the size of a shoe box. Typically, more than one animal is placed in the small living quarters. Larger animals, such as dogs, cats, and primates typically live in wire cages which is an issue for these intelligent animals because they become extremely lonely and bored without toys to play with or ways to exercise. Substances we use everyday, such as eye shadow, soap, furniture polish and oven cleaner, may be tested on rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, cats, and other animals. These tests are mainly used to test the degree of harmfulness of products and their ingredients. Fortunately, more than half of the animals counted by the USDA are involved in experiments that do not cause pain. In 2002, 489,262 animals (not including mice, rats, and birds because nobody knows for certain how many of these animals were used) were used in research that was painful, distressful, or both. Although, most of these animals were given something to take the pain away or help them get over the pain quickly. 103,764 of the animals made to feel pain were not given anything to reduce their pain and suffering. Although some of this pain was slight-like getting an injection with a needle-some of it was extremely severe. Most of these animals are only used in one test, although sometimes the same animal will be used in more than one experiment. Most are euthanized shortly after…

Every day animals are taken from their families to be used as lab rats for products such as makeup, shampoo and conditioner, medicine and so on. These animals then endure harsh tests that can lead to deformities and even death. Many people have started petitions to change the laws that allow for testing on animals. These laws would allow for the government to set strict rules and regulations, using animals as a last resort on any company wishing to test their products. They would also be required to donate fifteen percent of their proceeds to any organization that supports and protects animals. Although this would not completely eliminate animal testing, it would make it harder to acquire animals for testing, and failure to comply would result in heavy fines. This would help to lessen the amount of animals being tested on.…

Experiments on animals has been done all around the world since many years ago throughout the history. There are reasons behind these experiments; such as gaining knowledge about the animals themselves, education, research and developments for the benefit of human being. In the last reason fall substances and procedures tests; such as for cosmetic products, medicines, and surgical techniques; to see if they are harmful to humans or not. Many experiments that has been conducted involved quite some numbers of animals, with the majority of them being euthanized at the end of the research period. Not to mention a lot of misconducted researches, the law to protect animals from being used for testing, the rate of success in comparison of animal and human, and the existence of other alternatives to conduct research and testing for the same purposes. This became a problem for some people, as they think that it is not acceptable to conduct animal testing, especially for such thing as cosmetic products that is technically has no correlation between the animals and the continuance of human life.…
