Right now, millions of mice, rats, rabbits, cats, dogs, and other animals are locked inside cold, barren cages in laboratories across the country. “For days they languish in pain, ache with loneliness and long to roam free and use their minds” (PETA). These animals come from a wide variety of places such as city pounds, zoos, commercial breeders, and even circuses. Did you know that around the world these animals are being used to test products ranging from shampoo to new cancer drugs? In fact almost every medical treatment that you use has been tested on animals. For instance, animals were used to develop anesthetics (AnimalPort). All they can do is sit and wait in fear of the next terrifying and painful procedure that will be performed on them. “The stress, sterility and boredom causes some animals to develop neurotic behaviors such incessantly spinning in circles, rocking back and forth and even pulling out their own hair and biting their own skin” (PETA). Believe it or not animal testing is not required by law, animal testing is only done to protect companies from consumer lawsuits (Zoomshare). Animal testing
kills millions of helpless animals every day. Many animal experiments are not only horrible for the animals but also very unreliable; therefore, animal testing should be banned. Animal testing is described as a practice where countless animals are experimented on, and then killed after their use.
Animal testing is used to test out things like cosmetics, drugs, food additives, supplements, household products, pesticides, and industrial chemicals. Most of the animals are euthanized after they are experimented on due to health effects caused by the inhumane experiment. Basically animals die due to human errors (Buzzle). Thousands of drugs passed on animal tests hurt humans, and vice versa. For example the helpful medication of Aspirin fails animal tests, but benefits humans. Heart by-pass surgery was held off for many years because it failed on dogs. However, heart by-pass surgery has an extremely positive effect on humans most of the time (Animal Rights
Community). More than 100 million animals every year die in cruel chemical, drug, food and cosmetic tests, biology lessons, medical training exercises, and just for curiosity medical experiments. (PETA) Exact numbers aren't available because mice, rats, birds and cold-blooded animals, making up more than 95 percent of animals used in experiments. They are not covered by even the minimal protections of the Animal Welfare Act and therefore go uncounted (peta). The Animal Welfare Act is the only federal law that regulates the treatment of animals in research, transport, and exhibition. Only 1 to 1.5% of research animals are dogs and cats, and only .5% are non human primates. Biomedical research is part of the cause of these numbers. There has been a 40% decrease in the number of animals used in the biomedical research and testing in the United States since 1968 (Animal Testing Zoomshare). Less than 2% of human illnesses are ever seen in animals. Morphine puts humans to sleep, however it excites cats (animal rights community). Most of the animals tested on made to feel pain were not given anything to reduce their pain or suffering (Do Something).
Product testing is commonly performed on animals to measure the levels of skin irritancy, eye tissue damage, and toxicity. For example in the Draize test, caustic substances are placed into the eyes of conscious rabbits to evaluate damage to sensitive eye tissues. This is extremely painful for the rabbits, who often scream when the substances are applied and sometimes break their necks or backs trying to escape the restraints. This test is used for cosmetics and things like eyedrops (IDUSA). Lethal Dosage tests determine the amount of a substance that will kill a ratio of animals (idusa). Monkeys are addicted to drugs and have holes drilled into their skulls so that fluids can be taken from their brain, sheep and pigs have their skin burned off to test the acidic level of products, and rats have their spinal cords crushed in experiments. Tiny mice grow tumors as large as their own bodies, kittens are purposely blinded, and rats are made to suffer seizures. In some medical training courses, pigs and dogs are cut open and killed and cats and ferrets have hard plastic tubes forced down their delicate throats (PETA). To test cosmetics, household cleaners, and other consumer products, hundreds of thousands of animals are poisoned, blinded, and killed every year by cruel corporations. Mice and rats are forced to inhale toxic fumes, dogs are force-fed pesticides, and rabbits have corrosive chemicals rubbed onto their skin and eyes. Many of these tests are not even required by law, and they often produce inaccurate or misleading results; even if a product harms animals, it can still be marketed to you (peta). Alternatives are much less expensive and way more reliable (Zoomshare). Four hundred and fifty methods exist in which animal testing can be replaced. There are many more suitable tests such as chemical assay tests, tissue culture systems such as Cell and tissue culture (in vitro) studies are used to screen for anti-cancer, anti-AIDS, and other types of drugs, and they are also a means of producing and testing a number of other pharmaceutical products, including vaccines, antibiotics, and therapeutic proteins, (peta) cell and organ cultures, human skin patches, and computer and mathematical models. Although modern alternative test methods exist, huge multiproduct manufacturers, including Unilever, Clorox, Church & Dwight, Johnson & Johnson, and others continue to poison and harm animals in tests that aren't even required by law (peta). Animal Testing is terrible, inhumane, and unethical. There is no reason to ever hurt, or take an innocent life. Their lives mean just as much as any one’s. Animal testing kills millions of helpless animals every day. Many animal experiments are not only horrible for the animals but also very unreliable; therefore, animal testing should be banned.
