Warner says another issue is “the disturbing degree to which today’s parents- and mothers in particular- frequently lose themselves when they get caught up in trying to smooth out, or steamroll over, the social challenges faced by their children” (506). According to Rosalind Wiseman “people now feel like having a good relationship with your child means you’re involved in every aspect of your child’s life,” she continues by saying “nothing is off-limits. There’s no privacy and there’s no critical thinking” (qtd. in 507). Wiseman also recalls stories of parents giving away so called “loot-bags” (qtd. in 507) to lure the in-crowd to parties.…
In Antonina’s List, an article published in 2007 for The New York Time’s Sunday book review, writer D. T. Max states, “For me, the more interesting story is Antonina’s. She was not, as her husband once called her, “a housewife,” but the alpha female in a unique menagerie. I would gladly read another book, perhaps a novel, based again on Antonina’s writings. She was special, and as the remaining members of her generation die off, a voice like hers should not be allowed to fade into the silence.”…
The author gives several specific examples throughout the article of animal abuse which he then follows with the corresponding consequences of these actions and the lack of implementation by the USDA in these incidents. The author writes in this specific order to create an emotional response from the audience by first making the reader remorseful for the animals explaining how they were brutally treated. He then describes how there were no consequences for these actions which consequently causes the reader to feel outraged and more likely to side with…
This editorial is about Jeffrey Baldwin, a little boy who was killed by his grandmother, after he was placed in her care by Children’s Aid. She had previous allegations of child abuse but no one looked into it. They ignored all the signs that could have saved this boys life.…
On Wednesday September 16th of 2015, I will be going to the Smithsonian National Zoo with a group of my friends. The Zoo was founded in 1889. It is one of the oldest zoos in the world. There are 1800 animals that live in the zoo. One of the most famous spots in the zoo for tourists to see is the Giant Panda exhibit. The giant pandas recently just gave birth to baby pandas. I have only been to the Smithsonian National Zoo once. I went in eighth grade for a school wide field trip. I love seeing animals and going to the zoo. Back where I am from (Delaware) there are not any zoos or big public attractions for young kids and teenagers.…
Have you ever attending a circus before? Have you seen the thrill in they eyes of innocent children that are surprised by the lights, hoops, fire and large animals? Nobody know what happens when the lights shut off and the crowd disappears. At the circus animals are showing off talents that wild animals would not have obtained in their habitats. Nancy Colier argues in the article that the circus is a talent show for the animals that exhibits animal cruelty and abuse. Colier is correct that the circus exhibits animal cruelty and abuse, but I do not agree that the solution she states would be enough to notice the problem with the circus.…
Baby strongly believes a mother will make a positive difference in her life sadly; her ideal qualities of a mother were likened to a pimp. Baby remarked “When Alphonse came into my life, it strangely felt a little bit like he was a mother figure. Every good pimp is a mother. When Alphonse spoke to me his voice always had the same tempo as a lullaby” ( O’Neill, 2006, pg 186). When children are neglected, they accept and follow those who take interest in them. “Children look to their environment to decide what is right” (Johnson, A. G. 2008, pg 15) . Baby’s examples of acceptable behaviours were derived from an environment inundated with prostitutes and drug addicts which negatively impacted her well-being. By her own admission…
The comparison between Mother and the zoo animals is quite interesting, and in exploring the metaphor, makes sense contextually with the rest of the novel. However, after living the life of a New York Socialite in Harlem nightclubs and penthouse parties, Mother, like the zoo animals, is trapped in a sedative life; pacing back and forth inside of a stinking hallow cage.…
A mother is such a complex figure to think about. Mothers are expected to be loving, caring, sweet, but also firm and disciplinary. As seen around the world, mothers share different values and beliefs on raising their children. Many believe that the way a mother cares for her child molds the child into a certain adult. In ways, mothers have a power over their children that, as kids, are hard for our brains to grasp. In the article, The Estrangement, written by Jamaica Kincaid, thoughts on her mother are revealed and accessible to analyze. She shares her story about her mother/daughter relationship and throughout her story, The Estrangement, shows an underlining argument of the reality of the biased views children have towards their mothers.…
Scholars G.R. Hosey and Gareth Davey seem to overlook how the effect of zoo visitors could be turned positive as well as what is needed to stop the negative interactions between visitors and the animals. They do not cover the importance of governmental regulation on Britain zoos in order to make certain that they are meeting the minimum animal welfare standards. However, Paul Koene addresses how the prevention of the opportunity to act naturally has no effect on zoo animal health without considering animals that were not raised in the zoo but placed there further into adulthood. Each of these arguments contain gaps that lack information and other views of the issue. Scholars Chris Draper, William Browne, and Stephen Harris fill these gaps in their own research as they display their argument on the unsuccess of formal inspections in Britain zoos in regulating whether or not they meet welfare requirements. The research of these men not only covers all examined causes of low zoo animal health, but also narrows in on the originator of the issue: the lack of solid and strongly enforced rules and regulations. As successfully expressed in the research of these intellectuals, the laws and rules regarding Britain zoo animal welfare standards need to be better enforced and supervised…
There are many controversies when it comes to the topic of the Zoo. The question to ask is if zoos are good or bad for the animals? And reading on in this essay with the main point you will be able to decide for your own will. Discuses in the rest of this essay will be the living conditions of animals, if they’re able to have families, how they are treated, and if they are able to reproduce. These animals suffered with poor health because they had a natural food diet that they’re weren’t used to. According to S. Mary P. Benbow, “Unsuitable feeding practices of captive animals’ still continue”, which is sad because people who don’t know about this goes to the zoo not knowing what goes on behind closed doors. “In 1992, Masha, an elephant in the Moscow Circus, died after being fed a diet of vegetables, meat, red wine, sugar, and a brew of vodka”, said Benbow in her article.…
Humans often believe that we rule the world, making us the only important species in existence. Because of this people often don’t think about how powerful a small life can be. They don’t think about the little creatures roaming the earth and how they impact the world, so they just kick them aside. But others actually see the importance and beauty in the wild creatures. In both “Birdfoot’s Grampa” by Joseph Bruchac, and “Traveling Through the Dark” by William Stafford, the characters confront a similar question. Is saving lives of animals worth my time? We can see that both characters value life, but the man in “Traveling Through the Dark” faces and even harder decision than the man in “Birdfoot’s Grampa” does. Through the contrasts in both characters and mood, the authors explore the same theme through two different situations.…
A pet is defined as a domestic or tamed animal or bird kept for companionship or pleasure and treated with care and affection. Some people believe that pets are the most loyal friends you will ever have. Anyone who owns or has previously owned a type of pet, whether it be a dog, cat, fish, rabbit, or anything else, understands what it is like to have something so innocent depend on you. When purchasing a pet, you are taking on the responsibility of nurturing and caring for someone other than yourself. I chose a commercial by the ASPCA that raises awareness about animal abuse. The goal of the ASPCA is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.” I chose this commercial because I am an avid animal lover and I have both a dog and a cat at home. They are a part of my family, and I would never let anything bad happen to them or mistreat them. The thought of poor animals being abused or neglected for no reason at all disturbs me beyond belief. Why would someone choose to purposely abuse an innocent creature who has no way to defend itself, and has done nothing wrong? I do not understand people who do this. Through this essay, I want to state the reasons why I was attracted to this commercial and how it swayed me to support the association. Additionally, my goal for this piece is to represent how rhetorical appeals can be used not only in writing, but also in media. Even though this commercial is most likely geared more towards animal lovers, it does an excellent job of grabbing the attention of viewers who may not have a strong connection with animals in their own lives.…
Just look at them, listen to them, and if you dare, smell the odors that pour out when they interact with friends and foes. Look at their faces, tails, bodies, and most importantly, dare to look into their eyes. What we see on the outside tells us a lot about what’s happening inside animals’ heads and hearts. Animal emotions aren’t all that mysterious”. Yet, animal cruelty is ever present. The life of Kitty, a Chimpanzee held in captivity and forced to breed, illuminates the negative impact of animal cruelty. Kitty suffered for twenty-five years in a laboratory in Alamogordo, New Mexico. She was used as a breeder, giving birth to fourteen baby chimpanzees. Only four of those baby chimpanzees were allowed to be raised by their mother, Kitty. The others were used in harmful experiments. Kitty displayed remarkable motherhood characteristics, which was the primary reason as to why she was used as a breeder stated by the Humane Society. Chimpanzees are also one of the few animals protected by the animal law. The animal law gives Chimpanzees more animal rights compared to other animals due to their mental intelligence and capabilities. It is widely known that Chimpanzees are extremely intelligent and mock human behavior such as laughing, crying, and…
The parent-child relationship affects us more profoundly than any other relationship of our lives. It is the foundation of all of our relationships and the source of our earliest understanding about love, intimacy, trust and security. This relationship can start to build one’s self esteem and self-assurance or it can scar us for life. For this assignment, I chose to analyze parts of two well-known movies as well as a tragedy currently being presented in the media.…
