Story of Stuff (Summary & Review)
Story of Stuff (Summary & Review)

A very interesting stuff story by Annie Leonard – The Story of Stuff which tells you how stuff works in 20 minutes video. It is an interesting story and here is my reviews and summary. I do agree with most of her points but not all of them. What is your opinion?

In short this how the whole stuff system works:

* Extraction -> Production -> Distribution -> Consumption -> Disposal

[Agree]
She also pointed out this system is in fact in crisis because it is a linear system and we live on a finite planet and you can not run a linear system on a finite planet indefinitely. I personally love and agree with this statement.

EXTRACTION

[Agree]
The key point about this extraction is “We’re running out of Resources”. I definitely agree with this. The reason is simply due to fact that we’re using too much stuff that are not necessary. I don’t surprise with few facts that mentioned by her such as 80% of the planet’s original forests are gone, losing 2000 trees a minute in Amazon and etc.

PRODUCTION

[Disagree]
The key point in this section is “Toxics in, Toxics Out”. According to her, we use energy to mix toxic chemicals in with the natural resources to make toxic contaminated products. These contaminated products such as computer peripherals contain BFRs which are very super toxic to our brains and eventually inside our women’s breast milk. She got to be kidding? I don’t think toxic in the CPU is flying around in the air, do you?

[Disagree]
Another ridiculous example is that she says Toxic in the pillow too. Huh? Is this true? I strongly do not believe in it. I think she uses a wrong example to impress us. Yes, Toxic in but not Toxic out to the air especially in final products…

[Agree]
Yes, I will agree with pollution while making the products or when you simply throw away these so-called contaminated products.

DISTRIBUTION

[Confused]
It talks about externalizing the costs and that’s why how we can

In her article “If You Work in Cosmetology, Beware of Risks,” Jaclyn Stewart describes how chemicals are everywhere and the most amount of chemicals are located in salons, but people do not realize pregnant women are harming their unborn child with these salon used chemicals. When women go to the salon, they are surrounded by millions of chemicals that will harm their child in the womb. Stewart believes that people see the most popular products being used and they appear to be harmless, but this is not true as they contain the same or even more intense chemicals. The fact these chemicals are so dangerous in salons shows women are in danger to themselves and their newborn. Stewart argues that chemicals found in the kitchen, air, and foods are…

Through our wide span utilization of chemicals, we’ve altered the condition of our Earth in unpretentious ways. Such chemicals include arsenic (which is a supreme cancer causer) and DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloror-ethane). With the mentioning of DDT, the idea is introduced that these toxins not only stick to our bodies by hiding in our fats and bones but also act as mutations that can be carried on to our next generations. She spends the majority of the chapter listing off other pesticides like Dieldrin, Heptachlor, Chlordane, and Aldrin. She also talks of herbicides which are chemicals that kill plants…

Ketcham’s article brings light upon the harsh truth that the world is incapable of handling itself along with the growth of human consumption. Humans are proud of their innovations in earth, but it is costing the planet. The authors of Limits affirms this when they argued that “‘The application of technological solutions alone has prolonged the period of population and industrial growth, but it has not removed the ultimate limits to that growth’" [1]. I agree with this quote. For example, in a recent article I read, scientists have figured out how to essentially “hack” a better environment— a process called solar geoengineering. Although it proved to be beneficial to the environment, the scientist asserted that there will be less incentive…

This specific argument may have been the one that persuaded Congress to reject the enactment of the bill. However, science argues otherwise. For example, on the package of birth control pills it states that a 0.035 mg. small dose of Ethinyl Estradiol is used and this type of medication is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. If one small pill can prevent contraception at a “very low dose” then wouldn’t it make sense that toxic substance exposure at a very small dose can have an impact on our health too? Chemicals are found everywhere from the air and water to the cosmetics that we use on an everyday basis. Avoiding exposure is almost impossible. Ken Cook, the President of the Environmental Working Group, explained to the public that even a fetus in the womb is unsafe from toxic exposure. The toxins that the mother is exposed to can transfer through her blood into the umbilical cord passing into the body tissue and cells of the fetus. Ken Cook further highlighted the important issue of the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976 not having been updated. There were 62,000 chemicals assumed to be safe during this era and no other research has been performed to ensure that these chemicals are still truly safe. Scientific evidence proves that there are chemicals that can cause cancer, asthma, birth defects, and infertility. Our health and survival rates have improved over decades due to the advancement of technology which came from scientific research. Science is showing why this is a problem that needs to be addressed and we should…

    Cost of the Good Life

According to Annie Leonard’s “The Story of Stuff”, our current materials economy is a commodity chain in which goods go from extraction, to production, to distribution, to consumption, and finally to disposal. The system sounds stable but it is actually in crisis. Anyone with a simple understanding of mathematics can tell you that you cannot run a linear system on a finite planet in the real world. In order for us, the consumers, to get all of our fancy products and up-to-date technologies, a process that we turn a blind eye to takes place. At the source of the process, there is natural resource exploitation. “We chop down the trees, blow up mountains to get the metals inside, use up all the water, and wipe out all the animals.” As consumers, we are running out of resources because we have too much stuff! In the past three decades alone, one third of the planet’s natural resource space has been consumed. We are undermining the planets very ability for people to live here. In the United States, less than four percent of our original forests are left and forty percent of the waterways have become unsanitary. When the resources start to deplete, we do the same thing to third world or lesser developed nations. The erosion of the local environments of these nations and economies ensures a constant flow of natives that rely on the little money they can earn while working in…

Arsenic, rocket fuel, toilet cleaner, lighter fluid, and batteries; what if this were the newest baby food? American’s would be in outcry and rightly so. These ingredients are all poisonous, yet they aren’t just found in rat poison and household cleaners, they are found in cigarettes. Despite this 10% of women will smoke cigarettes regularly throughout their pregnancies even though they have full knowledge of the consequences (“Program”). The children of these mother’s are exposed to over 4000 chemicals before they are even born (“Neurobehavior”). While some may believe that smoking during pregnancy is a women’s right, in reality it is child abuse due to the mother knowingly putting her child in danger. Due to the severe health risks smoking cigarettes during pregnancy puts mother and child in, it should be outlawed and strict consequences put into place in order to protect America’s children.…

“For example, painters have long worked with pigments containing lead, carbon black, cadmium, chromium and arsenic compounds” (Miller and Blair 169). Those are just some examples of the hazardous materials that these artists use, not knowing the full effect it is having on their bodies. In a mortality study of 323 white female artists, most of them being painters, 76 died of a form of cancer and 20 of them from breast cancer (Miller and Blair 170). Once the cancer was discovered, the effects of the disease were tragic and prevented women from being able to function as they normally would, due to nausea, pain and even debilitating…

I also do not think he is credible enough to speak for environmental issues. As a statistician, he can effectively interpret numbers to mean one thing, but he does not go deep enough to understand the various repercussions. He did mention that there would be challenges to overcome with a growing population, and that it would require living more sustainably, but his main focus was that the improving conditions for humans meant that they would be able to survive much longer. I think this argument is too hopeful and ignores much of the environmental problems that are already too severe to fix. He has no substantial solution for dealing with a large population, other than expecting technology to solve the problems. In my opinion, technology will not be able to keep up with the rate of environmental degradation and resource use, unless measures are taken to drastically reduce consumption. Even if a problem is not as bad as people think, having a “don’t panic” attitude is dangerous because it reduces the urgency of solving those problems. It would be better to prepare now to live more sustainably than to think there is not an issue and fall to…

Other pollutants that are not destructive to the physical environment but effect the human environment are noise, light and heat pollution. This pollution occurs everyday in the urbanized world where we leave on lights, leave windows open when trying to heat our homes and produce decibels of noise that annoys our closest neighbors. Even though we occasionally don’t consider this as polluting the area, we are “…destroying the purity and sanctity of…” our environment.…
