Each film starts off with the phrase, "In a galaxy far far away." From that line, audiences can indicate that the world in which they are about to be immersed into is nothing like they have ever seen or read. With each movie, audiences see how the location in which Luke lives, Tatooine, versus where his twin sister Leia lives, Alderaan. Tatooine is seen as dirty and almost everyone who lives there is a merchant or builder of some sort. When looking into Alderaan, Leia obviously had a comfortable life, stemming from the fact that she was a princess. A perfect example of depth of story is when George Lucas focuses on the psychological state of Luke Skywalker and the information he knows. Later on, audiences would find out the rest of the story about Luke and Leia, with the prequels, but up until then, not a soul had a clue that Darth Vader was Luke and Leia's father. However, looking through Luke's eyes, all we see is a boy who is struggling to understand what the force is. When looking through Darth Vader's eyes, all we see is a villain who would have had a completely different path if he would not have chosen to go to the dark side. However, there are two characters who know more than what they lead on, truly manipulating the mind of others and proving their depth of knowledge is greater. With depth of story in Star Wars, we see the characters' minds being manipulated by one another because they are only wanting to protect one another, the same can be said for the characters who are a part of the Harry Potter series. The depth of story focuses on how these characters are pushed mentally and how they handle the knowledge in which they are given or in which the information has been hidden. However, one can argue that the depth of story also relies heavily on the world in which the characters are a part of. Without a strong story world, the depth of story would not only be different but also not make sense, depending on the character or story that is occurring.
