Stress Management Plan
Before beginning this Effective Stress Management course, I never gave much thought to how well my stressors were controlled. Now that we are at the end of the course, I have learned so many new things, from the kinds of stress to coping skills and even relaxation techniques. All of this newly found knowledge has helped me to compile the following plan that will help me deal with my stress in the most optimal way.
A major stressor in my life is school. I find that this particular stressor triggers a sense of fear. I’m always worrying about getting into the nursing program, passing all my classes, and having enough time to complete all my assignments and study for tests. A coping skill I currently use to help me with this is time management, although I could use it more intensely. Also, I feel that using mental imagery and visualization would be an effective relaxation skill to employ. I could visualize myself in the future, working as a nurse and this would allow me to gather my thoughts and make a day-by-day game plan for how I will get there.
Another thing that I find to be on my mind a lot is money. Although I don’t have too many financial problems, it seems like once I one unexpected thing, like a car problem, taken care of, another issue arises. This makes me fearful because I know that I need to be able to pay for necessary things and this makes my budget very tight. I find that using creative problem solving as a coping skill helps me to create a budget that is more flexible. I can look at my income and find ways to increase it, such as getting more hours at work, or borrowing from my parents if need be. To relax, I could use any number of meditation techniques in order to gather my thoughts and calm down.
My health is an occasional concern for me. This elicits a feeling of fear because I do not want to be unhealthy. Although I try to eat healthy and exercise, I sometimes find it hard because I do have a busy schedule. This is where time management could

    When I am stressed or overwhelmed I become anxious and irritable, my muscles tense up my back begins to hurt between my shoulder blades, I grind my teeth, I get headaches and my appetite suppress', all of these symptoms are contributing factors to my inability to concentrate at home, work, and of course, at school. When this happens my work is less than it should be, and my grades drop. While I was reading the handout by Rick Hanson, I recognized a few things in which I, myself use to regain my green zone, to slow my thoughts and recompose back to my center self. I am aware of my responsive and reactive modes, so when I find myself reacting to situations instead of responding to them, I remove myself and take time to reflect on the situation and find the best way to deal with that situation. With this approach I'm usually able to work out the stress in my body and muscles. I go to the rose garden down by the river where it's quiet and peaceful, and sit on the benches or sometimes I walk down to the big oak tree and sit underneath it. I can roll through my thoughts there without distraction, I close my eyes, take a few deep cleansing breathes, and release my irritation and muscle tension, and I always feel better when I leave there. Sometimes, from the rose garden, I go down by the river and find a big rock to sit on, and find stones to toss in the water. As I think about the issues I am having I toss the rocks into the river and let the stress go with them. It may sound silly but, for me, it works.…
