Ralph is assigned the leader of all the boys in the beginning so he had no real struggle. He told them what he thought was right, and they all obeyed until taunted by Jack. When Jack comes into the picture, everyone abandons Ralph and his plans to go eat with Jack. Ralph struggles to find allies and is annoyed at the fact that they boys just left him like that. Had the boys stood up to Jack and remained loyal to Ralph, Ralph would never have struggled. He needed that to bring out his driven personality. Ralph had many ideas that ended up failing him in the long run, but he still tried to convince the boys to come back with him. His strategy was that the fire was most important and that it would lead to rescue, ironically he was right except it was not his fire that got them rescued, it was Jack’s accidental fire that got them saved. In the end, many of the boys struggle for power in their own way. The boys were all up against each other and the only one who never gains true power is Piggy. The two main boys, Ralph and Jack, butt head several times through the novel but are always drawn to one another in a weird way.
