Studies have shown that student-athletes have gone on to receive a higher education. Student-athletes also have a higher GPA in high school. Athletes are also less likely to drop out of school, as shown by Angela Lumpkin and Rebecca Achen. Angela Lumpkin, professor of health, sport and exercise sciences, and Rebecca Achen, doctoral candidate and graduate teaching assistant at KU, show that athletes had higher percentages of days of school attended, graduation rates, and Kansas assessment scores and lower dropout rates than nonathletes. Athletics teach time management, which is an imperative skill to develop, especially in the academic world. Time management is taught since athletics takes a lot of time, from practices to games, etc. Athletes' time spent on practice alone averages between thirty and forty hours a week. Student-athletes also have to balance school work, practice, and spending time with family and friends. Students that participate in at least high school sports tend to have a graduation rate of ten percent higher due to the fact that they have the responsibility of managing their time wisely.
