In the first Scenario the teacher gives the students an example of a top level performance and allows the students to get into groups to discuss what attributes of the paper make it an excellent guide to follow for their own assignment. Then the teacher gives the students a low performing paper and allows the students once again to use peer grouping to evaluate what about the paper made it a low performing paper. This method continues by the teacher giving the students top quality performing papers for the standards she wishes the students to exemplify on their own papers. The students use the good and bad examples to create their own rubric for their own term paper assignment because they were able to evaluate all types of examples for a guide on how to complete their own work.

Once the students were able to break down their errors they were able to see if there was a common factor (which is interesting being that this was a math assignment) to which the student was having issues understanding. Then the student was able to receive help in the areas they were lacking skills to encourage success on the retake of the test.
This is a great method to use for middle school students because they are so critical of themselves and everyone else at this time, breaking the test down item-by-item allows them to see that all areas of development can be improved. This method allows students to go from feeling like a failure that will never succeed to feeling encouragement and a desire to have the same success
