This loss of a child brings upon the counter-argument that abortion is morally wrong because killing is wrong. In the case of abortion, the mother is not directly killing the child, but a third-party is ultimately responsible for killing the child. In cases where young teenagers become pregnant, many of them consider the decision of abortion. In the article, An Argument that Abortion is Wrong, the writer Don Marquis illustrates the meaning of this argument by stating, “My being killed deprives me of more than does my being robbed or beaten or harmed in some other way because my being killed deprives me of all of the value of my future, not merely part of it” (Marquis, p. 5). This quote is significant to his argument on why abortion is immoral because it illustrates the fact that in terms of abortion, if an unborn child is killed, it causes the fetus to lose a future of value. Losing a future of value inclines that the unborn child had the opportunity to live a life of value that could have impacted the world. However, due to abortion, that value of life is gone.
In terms of a counter-argument, a reasonable individual can make the claim that abortion is not immoral because the reproductive choice empowers women by giving them control over their own bodies. With that being said, it’s important to understand that abortion is not directly affecting the people of the third-party, it’s affecting the mother’s that decided to go through with abortion.
