Chapter 22 The changing scenery shows that Jonas has liberated Sameness. Jonas is vigorously living what he has only learned about through memories survival through agony. He has acquired the maturity to love Gabriel more than himself, giving him the energy to go on. Now he sees that choices have punishments and experiences fear, pain, and starvation for real, not as memories. Jonas must also reflect on his choices.
