The interview I had with Jackie Gerg at Lakeview Senior Care and Living Center was professional and informational. When I first arrived, of course I was a little nervous, as I didn’t know exactly what I was about to witness today. I still went into it optimistic about the professional experience I would gain. Almost immediately the nerves went away as I was greeted by smiling, familiar faces (I job shadowed Jackie at this very establishment last year). Although this was not the first time I had been there, I received the same warm welcome from all of the staff and residents. Lakeview is a smaller nursing home in a rural town. Because of this, I knew that there wasn’t an overabundance of residents (in fact, there were only 33). It is a smaller building with one long, wide hallway that extends from the residents’ rooms, to activity rooms, the lounge and the dining hall. This one long hallway makes it easier for the resident’s to move around, without obstacles in their way. For example, there is a stationary bike, dumbbells and many other activities that the physical therapists and occupational therapists use with their patients. The overall climate of the nursing home was surprisingly warm and accepting. I did not feel sad or uncomfortable as some would expect to feel in this setting. The staff, and the residents, for the most part, were all very nice and enthusiastic. The residents would actually look at me and smile. Jackie said that they love seeing new, younger faces, so they were very happy about me spending my day with them.
