-Joshua Harris, I Kissed Dating Goodbye
In relationships, commitment should come first before intimacy. Joshua Harris compared it an icing on a cake, and how those two things should go together and balance. The intimacy you give in a relationship should be dependent on the current state of commitment that you have as a couple.
Nowadays, especially in America, it has been very popular in their culture to be intimate with “no strings attached”. The author is from that country and he wants to call for young people to have a counter culture attitude towards romance. That, commitment should come first before intimacy. When we get too sweet and intimate at first without assurance of being committed to one another in a relationship, it would only hurt us in the end. If we are investing our heart, mind, emotions …show more content…
and time to someone who doesn’t have strings attached to us, it would only leave us lonely and unsatisfied in the end. In our relationships, a clear commitment should be defined first before any type of intimacy, may it be physical or emotional. Don’t just give all. Don’t be too sweet if it won’t be paired with a clear commitment. This book has been a great influence in my life, when the boys you hated when you were younger suddenly became loveable. It has been a great influence that I was able to keep myself reserved till I’m ready for a real commitment.
Stay hungry, stay foolish.
-Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs gave this as his closing remarks in a speech he has given in Stanford University. It is a reminder to always be hungry, to be curious and not to settle. He also said that they should stay foolish, to be an outside of the box thinkers.
As someone who works in the field of Information Technology, we should always remain curious and hungry to know more. In this field, hunger for more knowledge is a driving key for advancement. Technology is always moving forwards, not backward. So we should not settle for what we know in the current moment. We should always be learning and hungry for more. As we have this hunger on our inner persona, we should also be foolish, foolish to this world. Think of something not everyone would think. Let everyone else say that is foolish, it can’t be done, and do it. Do something no one else would dare. Be fearless. Do not be just like anyone else. Be an outside of the box thinker.
In the world’s broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!
-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Psalm of Life
The Author, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, saw life as a battlefield. In a battlefield, you should be like a cattle that is driven by someone but rather be a hero in this battle of life. Choose to be a hero, choose to do something that would be worthwhile and will leave a mark in this world.
This is my very first declamation piece I had when I was in grade 5 and it was quite memorable. Since then, every year I started participating as a representative of our class in declamation contests. It has been my battlefield, I would always be the one representing our class where I compete It would have not been like that if it weren’t for my teacher, Sir Dave Illustrisimo, who taught us how to deliver our lines. When I first spilled the lines of this beautiful piece they laughed at me because of how I first delivered it, I might be feeling nervous that time. He laughingly said “Para kang robot, ulitin mo! Ulitin mo!” then demoed how should I do it, I didn’t find it offensive. I was highly challenged. I walked back and prepared to go back in this battlefield of declamation once again and spilled my lines in front of them once again. They we’re left with no words, surprised, on the second time I delivered my lines. The attack to the piece was pleasing to them. I was chosen to represent the Grade 5 for the contest. After the competition, I did not win. Didn’t take it too much to heart since I was just a young kid then. But what Sir Dave said to me after that competition planted a seed in my heart, a seed I never thought would influence me a lot to keep doing declamation. He said, “Alam mo mas magaling ka pa dun eh, kung di lang talaga Grade 6 kalaban mo dun panalo ka dun eh”. It was out of the blue, I wasn’t even crying because I lost to that, so his words wasn’t meant to give me comfort, but they were honest words. Whenever we compete, we always compete to represent something. It’s like we’re being sent as the hero of a battle, as the Greeks would send Achilles to fight for them. It’s astounding how joining contests to represent a country, section or school can boost the confidence and morale of the people being embodied upon. The impact and influence it makes to the lives of the people watching. Our lives also can be compared to that. It’s a battle. We’re fighting for someone, for something. We can also be someone’s representative to the battle. We can be hero to others, there is always a hero within all of us. What we say can build up another hero in the life of other people. Our life is battle we need to be courageous to live and don’t let others drive your life. Live it. It’s yours. And know that there will always be someone watching and what we do and say matters.
This is My command: be strong and courageous.
Never be afraid or discouraged because I am your God, the Eternal One, and I will remain with you wherever you go.
-The Eternal One, Book of Joshua
Here, Joshua is about to take leadership of the people of Israel after Moses. Joshua is a young leader, and The Eternal One repetitively said and commanded the young leader to be strong and courageous and never be afraid or discouraged. He wanted the young leader to take heart because The Eternal One will be with him wherever he goes.
This is one very beautiful verse especially for budding leaders. The word strong here means the ability to get back up immediately. As a young leader, we are prone to mistakes since we are young and lacking experience. The Eternal One knows that. And He reminds us that the key for us to survive this phase is having the ability to get back up as soon as possible. Keep on learning. Don’t stay in the mud. If life’s a race and we’re the runners, when you fall, get up and run again.
You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new
dream.
-C.S. Lewis
Achieving something is not bound by age.
It’s such a cliché that age is just a number but it is infinitely true! Age can do something to give you an advantage but it should not be a limitation for you not to be able to achieve something. For example, I always wanted to learn how to sing and know music when I was young. I had that desire within me but my parents won’t support me to sharpen what I already had that time. Since then I didn’t have any further opportunity to sharpen my musical skill except for randomly singing at “videokes”. By the time I had the opportunity to formally study music I was probably 20 at that time. In our class I was considered already as their “ate”. I was thinking I’m not young as they are in learning this music thingy. But I did not let my age hinder me from achieving my goal to be musically adept, rather I have let my passion to learn music take me to set new goals for me to be musically profound.
