Summary Of Lather And Nothing Else By Hernando Tellez
In “Lather and Nothing Else”, by Hernando Tellez, a barber is mentally fighting with himself as he decides if he should enroll on the act of murder for the sake of the revolution. The story is suspenseful due to its first person view, the protagonist’s indecisive thoughts, and slow build up. A first person view will reveal the narrator’s personal thoughts. This includes the narrator’s feelings and possible future actions towards the current event. The protagonist exposes his fear and attempts to cover it up with, “my hands were shaking again… I had to shave this beard like I would any other, with caution, with care, like that of any other regular, making sure that I did not spill even one drop of blood from a single pore.” (Tellez 12) This

    Secondly, the barber would have been a coward because he would have to flee leaving all he had behind. He was well aware that he would have to run and thus he made a statement, “I would have to flee, leaving all I had behind, and take a refuge far away” (51).     Ioannides and Tellez both talk about how altered our decisions become at times of war, and how the unexpected conquers the expected and it is then that the truth of one’s identity (protagonist) is unveiled. In Gregory “When the order came, it was like a thunderbolt” (Paos Ioannides 3), the author wishes to emphasize on the irony of the friendship of an inmate and the soldier, and how he gets to choose between friendship and duty to his country.     In the book, being a barber is the protagonist’s profession and desire. I can connect this to myself because I have a strong desire to play the piano 6 years ago, and I continue to do it today.
