In the short narration The Mystery of Heroism by Stephen Crain, the main character Fred Collins, proves to be a hero. The fact that Collins is a hero is very indisputable throughout the duration of the story, especially when he embarks upon a journey through a dangerous battlefield to obtain water for not only himself, but his comrades as well. When Collins was on the battlefield filling the canteens he stated that it felt like “The canteen filled with maddening slowness, in the manner of all bottles (Crain n.pg). He has extreme dismay and time seemed to be going in slow motion because of how critical of a situation it was. As Collins was out in the battlefield “They fired fiercely and rapidly at the distant foliage on which appeared little…

The Modern society is filled with fears ranging from random shootings to world wide infection, but one thing that does not cross the many minds of those living in the today’s world is the fear of the world simply coming to an end. Years of religion and science have not led anyone to feel that the end of the world is fast coming. In the article by Ira Chernus called “Cheer up, it’s just the end of the world” she goes into great detail about just how much the end of the world lacks fear. After expressing the downward slope that the world made in the sense of fearing their last minutes on earth, Chernus goes on to tell how the whole idea got started. The idea that the world could even come to an end has been long forgotten yet Chernus brings up the good point that “Apocalyptic stories have been around at least since biblical times, if not later”.…

There are an infinite number of ways to define what it means for one to be educated: a student that scores well on tests, one that has a higher level of introspective thinking, etc. Although, one method of determining intelligence that schools are gradually paying more attention to is how well one participates in class. In recent years, teachers have been encouraging students to participate in class discussion more, and even including participation as a graded assignment. However, many factors, such as gender and type of discussion, may affect how much a student will participate.…

In the story “Eleven” by Sandra Cisneros is a story told as from the eyes of an eleven year old girl. The narrator at times, gives the reader the feeling you are really reading a story written by an eleven girl and not a grown woman. One can tell this by the author’s word choices throughout the story. Like the narrator repeatedly uses the word “stupid”, which to me is a word an eleven year old would really use. As she describes multiple things as “stupid”, such as describing her classmate Sylvia Saldivar. There are also times though that narrator appears wise beyond her years. She knows that even though she is eleven, she does not have that much life experience yet. As she says “I wish I was one hundred and two instead of eleven because if…

The internet. Such an ubiquitous entity, an omniscient presence in our lives that it is practically impossible to imagine a world without it. Especially in a country like the United States, nearly everyone’s lives revolve around it. In Nicholas Carr’s Hal and Me, he explores how much the internet has become essential to everything we do, from our work, school, and social lives. He also stresses how it has altered our very own way of thinking, how we are basically wired to think like the internet, but is that really so bad?…

In the short story, The Friday Everything Changed by Anne Hart, it connects to the theme of the outsider in society by having the girls in the story being the outsiders. For example, when Alma asks “Why can’t girls go for the water, too?” (16), this shows that the girls don’t have the same privileges as the boys and are not treated equally. This quote is very important to the theme because it is the real turning point in the story as it displays how girls are fighting for a change from them being considered the outsiders (not having privileges to do as much as the boys can). In addition, the role for the job of the water carrier was described as “...a boy” who was “...big and strong” (15).…
