Summary Of President Jefferson's Exploratory Expedition
President Jefferson decided to send an exploratory expedition west, to examine his purchase. Jefferson sent his own private secretary, Meriwether Lewis as the Commander in charge of the journey. Lewis then invited his former superior officer from the Army, William Clark. Their mission was to explore the unknown territory, establish trade with the Natives and to affirm the power/authority of the United States in that region. Lewis and Clark were the commanders of the Corps of Discovery, it had 33 people, which included one Indian woman and one slave.
