Now let’s focus on the meat of the essay, or what Sedaris really want the reader to get out of it. Sedaris believes himself to be successful, so he believes that he has turned off two of the burners in his life. One for sure is friends, as he really only has one of them, but he can’t figure out what his second burner is. His first guess is his health, but he seems unsure at best with this answer. He never really considers his work, as that is what he believes he is successful at, so it comes down to his family. His connection between the Kookaburra and his family ultimately lead to his discovery of a burner long since turned off. He postulates that due to his father’s spankings as a child, and the fact that he did not deem them very just, led him to cut off his family. He wonders what this means for himself as a person, as how can you judge success without a family to be the judge.
