Summary Of The Poem Kathleen By Gary Soto
The poem begins with a beautiful display of imagery, starting off with an interpretation of his family, describing them simply as his “wife”, “baby”, and “Kathleen”. It is regrettable how at this point we would not know who “Kathleen” exactly refers to, as there is more than one possibility. It says that he had a “baby”, which could possibly be ‘Kathleen’, if the baby is a girl. But another possibility is that ‘Kathleen’ refers to his wife, however, this possibility is unlikely as it would be a repetition from earlier. With both possibilities ruled out, it is safe to assume that a fourth party is involved and present, that of which could be a child, a mother, or possibly a sister of the author. Moving on from the family he then begins to illustrate the outside environment, describing the sun present as “flame-white” disc, painting a very bright …show more content…
The author then makes a noticeable turn from light to dark using symbolism make a transfer from the bright hearted tone to a depressing one, then stating “If I in my dark room dance naked, grotesquely”. The feel completely did a face-heel turn, throwing a curveball at me as I read. The unexpected dark drop impacted me because it was stunning on my end, as I, and more than likely no one else who read this previously was expecting such a sudden turn. That being said, the theme of this poem seems to be how life can look very pleasant on the outside, but others often are unaware of the terrors that lurk on the inside. Him being alone in his room could imply him being alone in his thoughts, “naked” and “grotesque” possibly elaborating on how he feels on the inside. It is quite possible that the author, or the main character in this case, may have some sort of inferiority complex. This is made apparent when he described himself like “grotesque”, this being a very ugly word to describe oneself

Through the text ‘A Clean Well-Lighted Place’ we can very clearly see the ideas of Loneliness and living life in despair. I think that these themes are very relevant to the society around us. A lot of people are unable to form connections or lose connection in their lives. This leads to people being lonely, much like the main character in the story. An example of this in the text is when the two waiters at the café are sitting down, and talking to each other, they begin to talk about the old man, “He’s lonely. I am not lonely.” This is the younger waiter referring to the drunken old man; the only reason for the man being lonely is because he struggles with making connections as he is deaf.…

The narrator is very lonely and feels as though that it is the only right way to live because he or she has not experienced anything but that. They are so focused on how they live that they have a grim outlook on everything hoping it will somehow get better later. To start this poem contains a lot of imagery of depression and jealousy throughout it’s entirety. The images shown really helped me understand the kind of place the narrator is in. At the beginning they describe the sky as being “pewter” which in its literal meaning is a grey tin alloy of tin and copper.…

The author initiates with the opening line ‘stasis in darkness’, to create a dark, depressive tone to uncover there will be no motion of light. Consonance and slant rhyme of ‘stasis’ and ‘darkness’ constructs the empathetic, intensity of mood the poem withholds in emphasising the dark, ideals of the persona. But, unexpectedly, change is apparent when the sky is described to be ‘substanceless blue’. Ultimately, it uplifts the tone as she has ridden upon to an environment of light. This reveals change of physical environments can revaluate individual’s emotive response and perspectives to emerge new values.…

Poems can have many interpretations when it comes to breaking the piece down to find its meaning. " Alone", by Edgar Allan Poe, directly and indirectly presents Poe's actual feelings towards his childhood. Poe introduces an adult speaker, which represents him, who is recalling his childhood. He uses a somber tone to describe his sorrow of feeling like he did not belong and he reasons about what loneliness and isolation did to him and compares it to a storm and a mountain. Edgar Allen Poe used his own life experiences in his literary works to get away from the stresses of his reality.…

Edgar Allan Poe’s poetry seems to always carry a heavy tone of sadness, themes of a longing for lost love, death, and isolation. In his poems “A dream within a dream” and “Alone” the tone and themes previously stated are undoubtedly represented. Both poems also feature a first-person narrator and that suggest it is Poe himself. Poe had a distinct style in his poems that use vivid imagery, metaphors, rhythm, and repetitive tone that pulls the reader into a world that is very dark and extremely sad. While both poems share the same theme of isolation, a struggle between reality and thought, and the use of first person narrator there are some differences on how Poe chooses to represent the feeling of isolation and how it occurs. I will be using the similarities of both poems and also some of their differences to prove…

After reading the poem, I gathered that the narrator was a child who was regularly abused by his father. However, it seems like the child is so used to the abuse that he describes it with light words and phrasing such as “waltzing” and “beating time.” I also believe that the waltzing metaphor could be a play on the phrase “dancing with death”, but that could just be a coincidence. I found William Van Field’s interpretation to be very interesting, and it was uplifting to look at a poem in a more positive light that at first seems depressing.…
