Summary Of West High School Classroom Observation
I have really enjoyed my practicum hours, observing and learning from the counselors at West High School. Many of my observations surrounded graduation and A-G requirements. Several of the counselors were going through the transcripts of their sophomores and juniors to see if they were still on track to graduate. Then, they would call in those they needed to meet with and talk to them individually. The solution for several that I sat in with was to add a zero period class. The counselors took two days to call in all of the English classes. They went over the differences between high school graduation requirements and A-G requirements needed to enter a CSU or UC school. I feel that I can be very effective working with such a diverse population. Many of our students will likely be the first in their family to attend college. They do not have help at home filling out college and FAFSA applications, therefore, our counselors do this with them. I would think that this would be very fulfilling. I feel like the overall student support system at West High School addresses the needs of such a diverse population very well. T.A. Portman stated, “that a school counselor, in the role of cultural mediator, engages in prevention, intervention and/or remediation activities that facilitate communication and understanding between culturally diverse human systems…that aid the educational progress of all students” (2009). I believe that I saw this with the counselors that I observed. I believe that I will be able to apply what I have learned in my career as a counselor. I saw a lot of practical interactions with students. The counselors were able to talk with students who were falling behind and stress the importance of doing well in order to graduate. You could see that there was a good working relationship between the counselors and their students. I hope I can have the same effect on my own students once I become a counselor, and make a difference in their
