The Forbes article "Are New York City Students Getting Smarter Or Are Regents Exams Getting Easier?" by James Marshall Crotty, expresses how accredits a confidential source saying that New York State has been steadily lowering the difficulty of its standardized testing in order for more students to receive a state-certified high school diploma. Although these statistics and speculations support the fact that the nation is becoming increasingly dumber it is not explicitly due to a lack of reading. Fluency is” a measure of the reader’s competence at decoding and recognizing sight words with automaticity at a specified reading level” (Pennington, 2013). It is believed that the higher the level of fluency, the higher the level of comprehension. Fluency involves three major areas: intonation, pacing, and phrasing. Intonation is the pattern of pitch change when reading a passage. It allows the audience to tell when there’s excitement or even a question. Pacing is the speed in which the student reads a given passage, and phrasing allows the student to use “meaning and structure sources of information” to help them solve problems as they are reading (Reading Recovery, n.d.). Kimberly is a sweet and hardworking student. She is very enthusiastic about reading and love fairytale books. Kimberly struggles with reading from the beginning of the year. The area of phonics specifically had been the hardest part of the reading process for her. The Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI) was administered on April 18th and helped as a diagnostic tool to make proper decisions and develop further an intervention plan for the student. The majority of my life has been smooth-sailing. For most of my life, I was told not to meddle in other people’s affairs and to not think too much about what others say. As a result, I would say that I have faced very little struggles. In the article “Nerd Alert: Reading is Good For Your Health,” the author Jen Christensen describes aspects of reading that may be beneficial towards our emotional and mental health, including how to face those struggles that I never had. Instead, I read books for the sake of reading.
