Summary Of Why Reading Fluency Should Be Hot
The article “Why Reading Fluency Should be Hot,” was a very interesting read. I think that it hit on some great points, while also making me think about how students are learning fluency. When the article starts discussing about fluency is typically how many words a student can read per minute, it mad me a little angry. I believe that fluency is made up of so many components that it can not be measured by one test. I did like how later in the article that they addressed that. Fluency does require automaticity and prosody. These two components have a large effect on fluency. I really enjoyed this article and how it displayed the research that was gathered. The components of fluency are important skill for students to learn. As teachers we need

Also media is constantly expressing how the United States in general is falling behind other nations in core subjects such as math and reading. The Forbes article "Are New York City Students Getting Smarter Or Are Regents Exams Getting Easier?" by James Marshall Crotty, expresses how accredits a confidential source saying that New York State has been steadily lowering the difficulty of its standardized testing in order for more students to receive a state-certified high school diploma. Although these statistics and speculations support the fact that the nation is becoming increasingly dumber it is not explicitly due to a lack of reading. I do not support this article because Gary Earl Ross harshly blames the nations dumbness on their laziness to not read a book as he states "Lack of time is no excuse." The mere title of the article is a harsh accusation. Personally I think that Ross is too confident in his own opinion. He says "The principal reason for our collective stupidity is that we choose not to read, especially literature---novels, poems and plays." expressing that he believes since he is a professor he can undoubtably pin point the nations increased dumbness to a laziness…

Assessment Results QRI-6. The Qualitative Reading Inventory 6 (QRI-6) is an assessment that uses word lists and passages representing various grade levels to assess a student’s level of performance (Independent, Instruction, Frustration) for word recognition and reading comprehension. Overall, Kenadie was Instructional when orally reading both a fourth grade narrative passage (ON) and a fourth grade expository passage (OE). In word recognition, Kenadie scored Independent for both passages; when substituting unknown words, she used similar sound patterns (ON 100%, OE 80%) which changed meaning (ON 50%, OE 60%). In retelling, Kenadie retold 20% of the OE passage focusing mainly on main ideas [main ideas (40%), details (13.3%)] and retold…

Fluency is” a measure of the reader’s competence at decoding and recognizing sight words with automaticity at a specified reading level” (Pennington, 2013). It is believed that the higher the level of fluency, the higher the level of comprehension. Fluency involves three major areas: intonation, pacing, and phrasing. Intonation is the pattern of pitch change when reading a passage. It allows the audience to tell when there’s excitement or even a question. Pacing is the speed in which the student reads a given passage, and phrasing allows the student to use “meaning and structure sources of information” to help them solve problems as they are reading (Reading Recovery, n.d.). For the purpose of this task, I will describe a three-day literacy unit including the strategies, activities, and the reason for both.…

Murray’s article is, in my opinion, a good article in the sense that his points are accurate and concise. Not to mention, it is common sense that all children cannot be expected to learn at the same pace or level. He clearly states “…educational romanticism is in fact out of touch with reality”. I believe this to be true as well. He brings up the fact that children with dyslexia can be taught strategies for coping, but reading never becomes easy.…

She was struggling with the word list form the QRI assessment. She identified 12 words and scored 60 percent of a 100%. It was difficult for her to focus because her attention span is very short. Some words she was unfamiliar with or difficult to decode. It was easy to see the frustration when we…

The majority of my life has been smooth-sailing. For most of my life, I was told not to meddle in other people’s affairs and to not think too much about what others say. As a result, I would say that I have faced very little struggles. In the article “Nerd Alert: Reading is Good For Your Health,” the author Jen Christensen describes aspects of reading that may be beneficial towards our emotional and mental health, including how to face those struggles that I never had. Instead, I read books for the sake of reading. Occasionally, I would read a book that would especially resonate with me, and then I would feel that I have reached into the soul of another person, rather than just bland words on a page. Sometimes, I forget that the authors are human beings as well, and they may as well have the same struggles as me. Often times, I wonder about the people behind the books, and how much of themselves they poured into their books. Books, instead of consoling me about my own problems, made me more aware of other people and expand my worldview.…
