August Pullman is a ten year old boy who was born with a facial deformity. He lives in New York City with his parents, his dog daisy and his sister Via. His facial deformity has made it uncontrollably difficult to make friends. It also doesn’t help that he has been homeschooled up until fifth grade. At the start of year 5 his parents decided that it was time for him to attend a real school. Auggie isn’t keen on the idea but they enrol him at Beecher prep, a private school. They take him to meet with the principal, Mr Tushman. Whilst august is meeting with him some kids from his new school are there to take him on a tour to be his welcome buddy. Auggie made two friends, Jack (his welcome buddy) and summer who sat with him on the first days of school. Julian -the boy who had been rude to him- had started a rumor going around the school that if you touch august you will be infected with the plague, he has also started placing mean notes in auggies locker. His peers make it very obvious that they were avoiding him. Auggie then begins to feel different and left out.
The story then switches to the perspective of via, auggies older sister. Vis is starting high school at the same time that auggie is starting middle school. Via has to learn to understand the fact that her family’s world revolves around auggie and his needs, and that hers often get pushed away, she refers to this as her brother being the sun and herself and her parents as the planets that revolve around it. The only person that ever made via feel like a sun was her grandmother, who passed away.
Things get much worse on auggies favourite Day, Halloween. Auggie overhears jack say to Julian and some other boys, that’s if he looked like auggie he would kill himself. Jack is oblivious to the fact that auggie is standing right next to him in a bleeding scream outfit. But things at home arent doing as well. The Pullman family get in a fight one night when auggie realises that via is hiding the fact that she is in the school play. She doesn’t want him to come because she doesn’t want to be known as the girl with a deformed brother. Whilst the fight is happening, their dog daisy is growing extremely sick, And she has top be put down. This choice devastates the Pullman’s. Their loss of their dog also makes them all forget about he fight and the family all go to the play to support Justin as his parents dont go. They expected to see Miranda as the lead female role but are hit with shock when they see that Miranda had gotten sick at last minute so via ferformed the main
