The Russian Bride’s Attire
We went to the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco last weekend. We found an oil painting that was named “The Russian Bride’s Attire (1887)”. We were very interested about this oil painting.
The author’s name is Konstantin Makovsky, he was a Russian. He was born in Moscow, 1839 and died in St. Petersburg, 1915. In 1863, a group of 14 students thought to leave The Imperial Academy of Art, and Makovsky was one of them. He thought the rules of the Academy were constrained. The teachers were too conservative. In 1870, the organization was largely changed the Association of Travelling Art Exhibits to give people a chance to follow the art, and to teach people enjoying art. The group

Here we see a dark, asymmetrical piece that seems to be referencing the First or Second World War. The painting has been composed on a horizontally orientated canvas and moves left to right. Beginning with an assumed deceased, young, blindfolded man in uniform, a woman carries the man on a stretcher, toward the horde of women. The women are either holding photos of the young man and pointing toward the sky or holding open wounds on their bodies in an attempt to literally hold…

Today it is almost impossible to prove that this painting was an official wedding document. Marriages of wealthy people were almost always social events. One of the reasons that you could see this as a legal document is because Jan is so accurate. Jan painted this wedding scene in the 14th century and in the 15th century this painting would not stand in court. Even if it was a contract it would take place at home and without a priest. The Catholic Church discouraged this type of marriage but it wasn't always denied. In the latter middle ages of France, you would have been excommunicated for such an action. Because of Arnolfini's social status it would have probably been required for Arnolfini to have a social wedding therefore Jan might have painted this before or after the wedding. From first glance you could presume that this painting has the potential to be a legal document but there are so many factors that state otherwise.…

The image shown on the lekythos is of two women, one a maid and one a mistress. The mistress is seated on the right side, in a chair, weaving a wreath. Her head is shown in profile, bent looking at the object in her hands. She is wearing a chiton, a type of sleeveless dress with a rounded neck, and on top of this the customary, heavier himation. Painted in white are her skin and the himation. The white is very cracked however it is still very visible. Her hair was painted in a dark brown. Some scholars have argued that she is also wearing a wreath, like the one she is weaving, on her head. Her figure is outlined in thin black paint, which is not completely visible on her entire body. She is seated in a chair that is painted dark brown.…

I have always been drawn to photographs that capture new love and romance. I love photography in general; especially weddings and engagement photos. Vittorio Matteo Corco’s painting, “When Love is Young,” can be viewed in the Appleton’s European gallery. It is a painting that was created in 1883 and has captured the attention of its viewers over two hundred years. The painting depicts a young man and woman who are very much in love. The couple is starring deeply into each other’s eyes, as if they are falling in love for the first time. The passion that the man and woman have for each other is what initially drew me into this painting, but I then became interested in the elaborate detail that Corco added. The man photographed is probably a poor sailor. He is dressed in a grungy outfit with cut off sleeves and has dirty hands. She on the other hand, is wearing her Sunday best; a beautiful, detailed and tailored gown with silk gloves and her hair elegantly pinned back. By the way he is peeking over the balcony, I assume they are sneaking around and trying to hide that they are contacting one…

In the Ottoman Empire, Armenians had some freedoms, but nevertheless were treated as second class ("Turkey"). In the middle of the 19th century, under the pressure by Russia, France, and Britain, the Ottoman government started passing the Tanzimat reforms, which were supposed to improve the conditions for minorities, but turned out ineffective ("Facts about the Armenian Genocide"); nevertheless, Armenians remained passive during this time ("Facts about the Armenian Genocide"). During the 1860, however, they began to ask for better treatment; when Russia vanquished Turkey in the Russo-Turkish war of 1878, they started relying on Tsarist Russia for acquiring this better treatment ("Facts about the Armenian…

The Russian Revolution was one of the most important revolutions in history. Just like the French people, Russians got tired of being treated unfairly by the Higher classes, and so decided to revolt against them. However unlike the French, they could not be satisfied, or entertained for long by a single revolution, reason why they did many revolts. Each time retreating at its middle, until they finally were annoyed and determined enough to overthrow the Government and change their lives as they knew it. Even so, that wasn’t the only cause of the Russian Revolution, along the many revolts came various relevant causes and events, but only few of them stood out, with such importance to today’s history of the causes for the Russian…

The art that I found the most interesting in the book “Gardner Art through Ages: The Western Perspective” was a painting named Birth of the Virgin. This painting is on chapter 14 page 415 and is figure 14-14. It is a large triptych meaning three part panel. The panel is separated by two white piers and includes arches at the top of each section. It was painted with Tempera on wood. It was created by Pietro Lorenzetti, an Italian Gothic painter of the Sienese school. Pietro Lorenzetti was a student of Duccio di Buonisegna. This painting has a dimension of 6’1’’ x 5’11’. It was originally located and created for the altar of Saint Savinus in the Siena Cathedral, Siena, Italy, in 1342. It is now housed in Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, Siena, Italy. This painting appears to be a boxlike scene. It is three dimensional and gives a…

Afremov is a sixty-nine year old man who is half Russian and half Jewish. He was born and raised in Vitebsk, Belarus but this particular art piece was made in Boca Raton, Florida. The painting is 36” wide x 30” high. Just like all of Leonid Afremovs other pieces of art this one is also an oil painting. He used a palette knife to apply the colors to the canvas. Although Afremovs has been painting for decades this specific piece was made sometime before 2010. There is not a specific date to when it was created but we do know it is a couple of years old. Now while these facts about the painting are important so is the design and look of the painting itself which leads to the next set of details pertaining the art.…

The painting completed in 1642 is a Dutch treasure. The painting is large measuring 11” x 14”. Its was painted in the peek of what is now known as the Dutch Golden Age, where the militia painting where in full effect. But Rembrandt, which was known for not following the norm, decided to take a different approach when capturing the militiamen in his painting. Unlike the single filed lines of men painted in earlier portraits Rembrandt decided to paint the men in such a way that made them look like they were about to march out of the painting. Making it much more intriguing to the people then other paintings of its time.…
