1) In what fundamental ways was the mandate of heaven different from other governmental systems in the ancient world? What were the limitations of the mandate of heaven?

ANSWER- the mandate of heaven was a monarchical system which allowed for a mechanism for the lay population to depose an incompetent or corrupt monarch, in contrast to the western monarchical structure of dynastic change through rivals usurping power. The Mandate of Heaven does not require that a legitimate ruler be of noble birth. The Mandate of Heaven had no time limitations, depending instead on the just and able performance of the ruler and his heirs.

2) How important was the development of writing to the ancient Chinese? Trace the evolution of this practice.

ANSWER- The inscriptions on the oracle bones have become very important historical evidence in the study of early Chinese civilization. The oracle bones, known in Chinese as jia gu wen, are either tortoise shells (jia) or ox shoulder blades (gu) with scripted texts (wen). The first oracle bone was discovered in 1889 in An Yang County, the capital of the Shang Dynasty (1,600-1,100 B.C.E.), and so far nearly 100,000 pieces have been unearthed. The inscriptions on the oracle bones represent the earliest form of the human written language.

Summary of Findings: On April 9, 2015, the following investigation to place at the forensic lab located in Madison Wisconsin, where I was given a Bid rigging and Cyber-Stalking case to investigate pertaining to two companies (Denver Construction Inc.) that is operated in Colorado and (Dells Construction) that operates in Wisconsin. I was also given instruction to research a real-world bid rigging current event. After analyzing the information that was presented to me about both companies, I first attempted to analyze the case of bid rigging which is a scheme in which businesses collude so that a competing business can secure a contract for goods or services at a pre-determined price. Bid rigging stifles free-market competition, as the rigged price will be unfairly high. The Sherman Act of 1890 makes bid rigging illegal under U.S. antitrust law. Bid rigging is a felony punishable by fines, imprisonment or both.…

After the emperor, the governors ruled and after them the officials took charge. The only way a person could become emperor was if the Heavens gave him the empire. Their government was ruled by the Heavens. The person could not just make Heaven give him the empire, the emperor could recommend a man to Heaven, but must not rely on any guarantees. The Heavens must accept the man before he receives the role of emperor. Heaven determines the decision by knowing what the people think and whether or not the people will except the man as their emperor. People believed in the Heavens to make the right…

Early China’s cities, Shang and Zhou, have very distinctive features in the ideology of kingship. In the Shang dynasty, the king and his administration were the controllers, where the king was the intermediary between the people and the gods. However, in the Zhou dynasty, the ruler was chosen by gods to justify power, and if he/she misbehaved or acted inappropriately, they would be kicked off the throne; this was called the Mandate of Heaven.…

A solid form of government is essential to any civilization, and although Egypt and Shang-Zhou were both successful, they both used different and similar methods to conform to their religious and social standards. Egypt used a Pharaoh as their king, which they claim the pharaoh was sent from a god in order to maintain ma’at, the distinctive order of the universe. On the contrary, the Shang- Zhou Dynasty followed their own theory of the Mandate of Heaven. The Mandate of Heaven served as a foundation for the Chinese government for three thousand years, and was used when a ruler had neglected his duties such as dishonoring gods, expressing tyranny, or ignoring warning signs of disasters; heaven could remover this “mandate” and put it in the possession of a more worthy ruler or family. After a ruler has fulfilled their duties and depart the physical world, both Egypt and the Shang-Zhou…

The mandate strengthens the governmental system although it also weakens the system. "The ruler held a celestial license to rule as long as he ruled well, but if, through indifference or corruption, he failed to honor the covenant, someone would come along and overthrow him in the name of the people" (Bosse 282). This quote is telling us that the mandate, who is supported by the gods, will reward the ruler "If no effort had been made to do wrong, wrong was not done to nature, nor was celestial harmony was disturbed." (283). However, if the ruler failed to respect the promise, there would be a rebellion in the future. For example, when Hong goes to get a message for the White Lotus, a rebellion society against the government, "...he was there, nearly close enough to the stout little man to reach out and touch the censorial badge on his robe" (272) This is an example in how a peasant rebellion is on the edge of an outbreak due to a ruler not doing a good job, which results in the gods retracting. Another example of a disruption within the mandate of heaven are natural disasters such as the locust…

One interesting subject from the lecture presented on the sixteenth of September, was the Mandate of Heaven. The Mandate of Heaven is an ancient belief or theory of the Chinese that heaven sends the emperors of China with virtue and propriety. The emperor or ruler was considered to be the son of heaven and expected to be good and responsible. A ruler, however, can lose the mandate if he is unable to or does not live up to his responsibilities. Natural disasters were interpreted as signs from heaven of its opposition toward the ruler like famine or flooding. Also, if the peasants would revolt against the ruler that meant that the ruler had lost his support from heaven. There were no particular rules about who the ruler may be and it did not…
