Before Marvin’s game his dad, Mr. Whalen, asked Marvin if he wanted a ride down to the school and Marvin then replied with “No. Thanks, Dad, but no. It’ll do me good to run down there.” (435) This act shows how Marvin is not lazy and knows how to prepare for the game. In addition to warming up he rests, he also knows what to eat and how much. Mrs. Whalen was nervous that her husband, Mr. Whalen, would end up getting caught in the excitement of the game. He promised her that he wouldn’t. When they got to the game, Mr. Whalen eyed the big center before the game started. During the game the big center would not stop fouling Marvin and, “again the big center fouled Marvin.” (439) This act could cause Marvin to get seriously injured, but instead he ignores it and takes his shots. The big center’s dad was speaking harshly about Marvin and saying Marvin should get called instead of his son, Guido. Ironically Mr. Whalen, “who talked long and seriously to Marvin about sportsmanship,” (433) ends up getting into a brawl at one of Marvin’s basketball game over this. Right before this had happened Mr. Whalen’s wife told him that he should go take a smoke because he was getting too excited, and she was trying to help him relax. Unfortunately Guido’s dad caught him at the wrong time. At the end of the fight the principle talked…

When William was brought to Yankee Stadium for the first time in years by Jamal, it changed something inside him. He had all his childhood memories of spending time with his brother flood back and it transformed him. He saw how much Jamal appreciated him and understood that people still cared for him, causing him to want to explore the world more and see what he had missed for so many years. The New York Times (2000) stated in their review, “In his haste to escape, Jamal loses his bag containing his notebook. Shortly after Jamal is down on the court when his backpack sails out of Forrester’s window. Opening it, he sees corrections and it isn’t long before he becomes the reclusive legend’s writing pupil (pg. 2). After breaking into William’s apartment, he leaves his notebook and when his bag is returned to him, he sees corrections and decides to go back and ask about them. As he continues to write for Forrester, he in turn helps to tutor Jamal and work on changing his mindset towards school. Jamal’s viewpoint on how he makes decisions was transformed at the state basketball game. He was told he needed to win state in order to clear his name in Crawford’s class. Instead of having someone else make the decision for him on how he should resolve his conflicts, he decides to do his own things and miss the free throws to win the game. He’s given the chance to do whatever he…

Jamal believed, as a young boy, in the thug life philosophy, “ ...thug life was a celebration of young brothers who hustled, gangbanged, and lived outside the law to survive” (272). Jamal matured to realize that thug life was a result of systemic racism due to a lack of expectations of non-white teens. After seeing the senseless deaths of young people, he realized that he would have to something to help kids get out of “thug life” to help them succeed. “If Andre, or perhaps even the boy who shot him, were in a creative arts workshop instead of out partying or doing drugs on the street, then maybe Andre would be alive”(277). Jamal is saying that if non-white teens had more opportunities, they would be able to succeed and not fall into drugs and violence on the streets. This realization helped Jamal be a successful adult and youth advocate for creating programs like IMAPACT that led to a culture of art and creativity among the non-white…

It was her very first basketball game. Chase came with me to, my older brother, Nate’s basketball game. We arrived just as the Chelsea Hornets were getting ready. The warmth of the gym wrapped around our bodies, and the scent of teenage boy sweat filled our nostrils, making me almost retch. Chase sounded very excited when she asked me, “Where should we sit?” As any normal little girl would do, we both raced each other to the top of the blue high school bleachers and sat down in sync. My mom, little brother, Soren, and older sister, Lexi, followed behind the two of us while Nate ran out to the court to join his Chelsea Hornet basketball buddies. The game went on with the Hornets losing by seven points. Moms among the crowd were yelling about unjust fouls made towards their team.…

I have chosen the genre Ska to research about because I have never really heard of it before and it’s not something I used to so I think it will be good to concentrate on something that is out of my comfort zone. I also feel that it will help me widen my variety of genres that I am able to perform. Ska emerged in the 1950s in Jamaica but advanced in the ‘60s. It didn’t evolve from any other musical style or movement but it actually came before rocksteady and reggae.…
