1 Introduction
Organizational structure is very important regarding to manage organizational resources (Martin 2005). This assignment will discuss about organizational structure and its effects on business performance in specific case of Syngenta Corporation. Firstly, we discuss two different types of organizational structure, which are hierarchical structure and matrix structure, and the advantages and disadvantages of each in case of Syngenta. Then, we will discuss the need of employee empowerment at Syngenta.

2 Hierarchical structure & Matrix structure
According to Schermerhorn (2011), “organizational structure is a system of tasks, reporting relationships, and communication linkages”. A formal Organization structure is reflected in the organization chart (Badawy 1995)which will make it easier for executives and managers to understand their

    An organisational structure accurately divides, selects groups and coordinates job tasks. Structure contributes to explain and predict organisational behaviour and organisational design. Managers often change organisational structures due to performance and efficiency being low (Robbins et al 2004), they should also ensure consistency in the structure, scale of operations, tasks at hand, need of stakeholders and strategic decision of the organisation, this distinguishes successful organisation from less successful organisations (Wood et al 2006).     Organizations may choose from a number of common operating structures. One popular structure is the functional organization, where the company is divided into separate units based on role, such as accounting, marketing, research and development or distribution. The functional structure offers a number of potential advantages as well as disadvantages. An advantage of a functional organizational structure is that it offers a high level of specialization. Each unit operates as a type of self-contained mini-company, charged with carrying out its specific role.
