Taming of the Shrew is a famous play written by William Shakespeare. In the modern day version, 10 things I hate about you, Gil Junger explores the relationship between men and women. Junger has taken Shakespeare’s ideas of favouritism, how looks can be deceptive and a person’s basis for a relationship and has put them into an up to date teenage friendly format.
The relationship between fathers and daughters is often quite difficult. In Taming of the Shrew Baptista often shows favouritism towards Bianca. In act 2 scene 1 where Bianca and Katherina are fighting, Baptista comes in and stands up for Bianca and says to Katherina “Why doust thou wrong that did ne’er wrong thee”. In the beginning of the film Kat was known as a ‘heinous bitch’ that is rude and is an outsider. Patrick has no feelings for her and is paid to become her boyfriend. Like Petruchio, Patrick uses unusual methods e.g. singing and dancing in the football stands to get Kat’s attention. As their relationship grows, Kat becomes a softer, nicer person and even helps Patrick get out of detention by flashing her breasts at the teacher. The big difference that Junger has used is that Kat does not know that Patrick is paid to take her out. She finds out in the prom scene where she says “you were paid to take me out by the one person I truly hate, I knew this was a set up!” The endings are still the same. In Taming of the Shrew Katherina opens herself out her speech about her love and obedience to her husband. In 10 things I hate about you, Kat expresses her feelings about Patrick in her poem where she says “... but mostly the way I don’t hate you...” Although both relationships started out for the wrong reasons i.e. money, they have both successfully developed strong and committed
