The Japanese seem to rely on a heritage culture more than a local culture for their sleeping habits. I think the Japanese people are more accustomed to the heritage culture in getting fewer hours of sleep because it is a lifestyle that is passed on from generation to generation. This can include practices, beliefs and values. North Americans and some Europeans rely more heavily on a local culture for their sleeping habits because this is the experience of everyday life, this is based on personal preferences.
