Technology Has Negatively Affected Our Lives
Technology is something that we can’t live without in this fast paced world. We use it to help us get through our everyday tasks and activities. It has helped change our lives by making everything easier to access and simple. It has also affected our social and physical life in many ways. In the essays “Attention Deficit: The Brain Syndrome of Our Era,” by Restak and “The Limits of Friendship,” by Konnikova, they both discussed the impact of technology on us. Although technology has greatly helped with the improvement of our lives, it has also negatively impacted us because it caused us to lose face to face interactions and acts as a distraction in our daily life. With the influence of technology, the way in which we interact with one another …show more content…
Being online has also became a way of life. We can do a lot of things online. For instance, we can talk to our friends, order food and shop online. All these benefits has only made us to stay inside more and be isolated from the world outside. One might think that online communication helps to improve our social skills, but ironically, our social skills can start to deteriorate while communicating online constantly. “One concern, though, is that some social skills may not develop as effectively when so many interactions exist online.” (Konnikova). I agree with what Konnikova said because talking online and in person is a completely different experience. When talking online, there is more time to think and revise on what we are going to say, but in person there is not much time to think too deeply into what we’re going to say. Also the fact that we don’t physically see the other person’s expression can cause it harder to understand the other person’s true feelings when interacting behind a …show more content…
When we use technology, our mind goes to a different world. “[…] through technology, anyone at any given moment is immediately available “here” and “there” lose their distinctive meaning” (Restak). What Restak meant by this is that with technology, we can be in different places mentally. For instance, we can be talking to someone in front of us, but texting to someone in another country. This kind of act can be also known as multitasking. With the aid of technology, multitasking has become the solution to complete more task at a time. However, we are not evolved to multitask. “[…] the brain has certain limits that we must accept” (Restak). We have the ability to change what we do, but we can’t change what is already made. Pushing through our limits can cause mistakes and put us in dangerous situations. One example would be texting and driving. When we text and drive, we are putting ourselves and the lives of others in danger. There are already a lot of distractions on the road and added on with texting, our brain simply can’t function properly because it has limits on what it can

In the text “Critical Thinking and The Techno-Brain,” Dr. Hiner describes how “we reside in a technological cave so pervasive, so distracting, and so enticing that its very presence in our lives often goes unnoticed” (214). This quotation drew my attention to the role that technology plays in our lives. Our world revolves around the use of technology and connecting to others by digital means. We are constantly glued to our phones and surrounded by images, social media applications, and family and friends who stay connected through the internet. The text made me contemplate the amount of time we spend on electronic devices and how we have become immersed in a digital world.…

The digital age is forming our brains into 140 characters and making us express ourselves in little yellow faces. When we’re bored we go straight for technology. We are more distracted, have decreased attention spans and most importantly addicted. Science has gone a long way and so far has proven that the technology produced from it has mind altering abilities that affect our daily lives.…

Some people might say that technology is a definite positive development with only positive changes. However, although the technological advance have been and is extremely helpful to everyone around the world, people need to think about how people can be too consumed in the technology that they can isolate themselves from the outside world even. Having fun with technology is normal, but we must not forget how to really communicate without the use of texting or email. Communicating face-to-face should be a key skill humans should never lose. The saying, “having too much of a good thing, can be bad,”…

When I first picked up this book I didn’t know any downside any dark side that the most vital and transformative technology might have. I was just enjoying the benefit of multi-tasking, the full access of information that internet provides. I spend less time reading book and more time on the web, communicate with each other, exchange information. I didn’t question myself why I’m getting so many distractions nowadays. I couldn’t concentrate on one subject for a long period of time.…

Multitasking is the most detrimental activity in the human race. It is used in multiple aspects of life, including technology. Technology is revolutionary. In Restak’s “Attention Deficit; The Brain Syndrome of Our Era,” he expresses how today’s society has affected humans to the place where their brains have been rewired. Additionally, in the documentary Digital Nation, the film, like Restak, also shows how technology has affected humans. As a result of technology, there have been many advances in medicine like the creation of the MRI and CT scanners that have saved numerous people from life-threatening injuries. However, technology is also destructive. Continually, countless people have not developed the…

John Lorinc’s article, “Driven to Distraction” explores how the human brain functions while surfing the Internet, writing e-mails and texting every day. In what seems to be a life with “interruptions”, Lorinc attempts to explain how “multi-tasking” and having access to an enormous amount of information has made it harder for humans to think and analyze the collected data. However, Don Tapscott’s excerpt from his book, “In Defense of the Future”, denies that technology has affected the human’s brain and asseverates that the “net generation” has remarkably and positively changed and broadened their aptitudes. Having access to the Internet and electronic devices like cell phones is fairly new in our society. Not long ago BlackBerrys and iPhones…

The most noticeable danger of technology is how it isolates people, which can impact relationships and health. All around the world, people spend significant parts of the day plugged into computer terminals, wearing headphones, or absorbed into their smartphones, which block out the outside world. Social media cuts off human interactions, which can affect relationships between family and friends. In a recent study, scientists found out that the human brain becomes less concerned with interactions and highly concerned with self-preservation. People become more interested with Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat notifications rather than spending time with others. Without these relationships it damages one’s health. Not only does technology change behavior, but the children using smartphones now have a risk of brain cancer. Studies show children developing a risk of cancer because of radiofrequency exposure from cell phones. Additionally, technology can be very convenient at times, it seems to cause a lack of activity, and human reliability brought on by the gradual use of digital products. For example, the 2008 film Wall-E, shows the negative impact of technology in the future when Earth has become a corrupt wasteland. The humans’ artificial lifestyle on the Axion (spaceship where the humans live) has separated them from nature, making them…

Ever since the advent of the modern digital culture, there have been some heated discussions on the topic of whether technology is a foe or a friend. Some people argue that it is influencing us negatively, scattering our attention and diffusing our concentration, while others believe otherwise, suggesting that it is making our lives more efficient and convenient. The emergence of such technology not only enhances some of our fundamental cognitive abilities, but also enables us to explore more of what is we are truly interested in.…

Granted, Facebook or other social media sites are a great way to keep in touch with long distance friends or family. This can be great but should not be the sole way to interact with people. One reason as to why technology should not play a part in limiting social interaction is because it offers no face to face communication. Texts or emails cannot stand in for hearing a friend’s voice or seeing a smile in person. Little by little, the internet and mobile technology seem to be subtly destroying the meaningfulness of interactions between two people. The second way that technology ruins social interaction is by taking away the emotional aspects of communication. “LOL” or a smiley emoticon do not fully convey the actual emotion behind the response. All people have a basic need to fill social bonds and that is meaningless to do when the actual laugh or smile hides behind a screen. This is also seen in Bradbury’s novel “The Pedestrian” when everyone would just stay inside and really only experience whatever the television let them…

“I’d attended school in the real world up until sixth grade. I was a painfully shy, awkward kid, with low self-esteem and almost no social skills-a side effect of spending most of my childhood inside the OASIS. Online, I didn’t have a problem talking to people or making friends. But in real world, interacting with other people-especially kids my own age-made me a nervous wreck. I never knew how to act or what to say, and when I did work up the courage to speak, I always seemed to say the wrong thing” (Cline 30). Scientist have been proven that people do like to talk on internet than outside world, people do have lots of personality on internet and people do have different attitude too. It’s like your friends, you know for years and they talk differently on…

In the twenty first century, evolution and constant use of technology have greatly impacted humans, and their ways to approaching media. Many people believe that technology has improved the quality of life of the people at a great depth, while others see it as a force that has escaped from human control. Modern technology such as Internet, may help people solve problems or gather information faster than an ordinary human being is capable of. At the same time, it can also destroy one’s social life and interactions with humans if proper balance is not maintained. While people’s thoughts regarding the two sides are intriguing, the question is, are the negative effects gradually outnumbering the positive ones? In the essay “Is Google Making Us Stupid” written by Nicholas Carr, and “The Multitasking Generation” by Claudia Wallis, we are presented with ways in which technology affects the daily lifestyle of human being. Even though both authors perceive some of the beneficial uses of modern technology, they ultimately pinpoint the negative effects of it to a large extent. While the bad effects remain constant between both authors, they introduce different aspects of ways humans are being affected – Carr, emphasizing on how technology (Internet in this case) has drastically changed the way humans acquire and present information, and Wallis, focusing on how technology (Media Multitasking) deteriorates social interactions among humans.…

The internet has become a more and more relied upon medium in peoples' everyday lives over the past decades since its inception. People use it to do their shopping, do their taxes, research any number of topics, and engage in communications. People send emails to one another, receive online help with various problems, and carry on real time conversations using chat rooms and instant messengers. Several studies have been completed to test whether this seemingly increasing reliance on internet-mediated social communication is beneficial or detrimental to communication skills and social interaction. It has been found in these previous studies that the results are quite contradicting. Such studies that are developed to test the positive nature of this new communication medium have found that the internet is complimentary and that relationships borne online are healthy and have positive implications. One such study, "Online Chat Rooms: Virtual Spaces of Interaction for Socially Oriented People," found that online relationships are not only rich and genuine in character, but are more quickly set up and straight-forward than face-to-face encounters, cutting out the uncomfortable first meeting jitters that many people face. In an on-the-go society, this is very appealing and beneficial. Another study which revealed the positive attributes of internet-mediated communication is "Psychological Predictors of Internet Social Communication." This study concluded that online social communication is more likely to be an outlet for sociable persons, rather than a compensatory mechanism for the shy and anxious. Each study reveals that communication online is an extension of traditional social behaviors, not a replacement.…
