Teen Advisory Council Essay
The Teen Advisory Council

Growing up, I have always been dedicated to volunteering and community service. I was taught that giving back and being a blessing to others is one's sole purpose in this World.

Serving as President of the Teen Advisory Council for the Memphis City Public Library has been a tremendous opportunity for me and the benefits have been very rewarding.Together my fellow members and I have accomplished so much. I have gained extraordinary experience, learned leadership skills, became more outgoing, as well as formed a rapport with my fellow members. Due to my hard work and ongoing service, I received the 2015 Teen Volunteer Recipient award for The Memphis City Public Library.

Our meetings, which transpired on the last Saturday of each month, consisted of round

After going through the application process, I, along with others, was selected to serve as a member. I aimed to transform the library by creating a more welcoming atmosphere and environment for my peers. With my great ideas, I felt that my input would be very valuable and that I would serve as a good asset to the council. Many people view the library as nothing more than a place to read, study, and do homework. While all of these things are amazing, there needs to be more fun and exciting activites for my peers to partake in. With teen violence and crime being such a pressing issue today, it has tainted our reputation. For some, The problem is not that they are rebellious, but are just not utilizing their minds the right way, so instead, they turn to committing crimes and wrongful acts to stay occupied. What is needed to eliminate this issue are teens who are willing to put their minds to good use in an effort to do positive, be influential and overall impact the greater good. I was persuaded to join the teen council in hopes of making these goals a reality, and to shed light on the greatness of today's

The components of citizenship, community service, academics, work and home life, and extracurricular actives help me shine as a well-rounded individual. As an involved and caring citizen in the Union Township community, I do my best to make my mark. Displaying a good role as a citizen through community service has been a value I possessed ever since I could remember. At a young age, I started to serve my community with my parents at both school and church events and it has stuck with me since. Through community service such as being an assistant teacher in St. Veronica’s Religious Education Program, Glen Este High School’s member of National Honors Society, and Key Club, I not only helped out Union Township but I have also made new relationships and feel good about myself. Community service always makes me feel better because I know I’m helping others and making my mark through the friends I have made through both of these service programs.…

Last year I was asked to be a small group leader for incoming 7th grade students this year. Having known what it felt like to be a new student in a completely different school I jumped on the opportunity to help. I, like Billy tried to be open and welcoming, encouraging the 7th graders to become involved in the Xaverian community just like Billy did for me and I’m sure many others. My goal was to be able to help the 7th graders in any situation whether they needed advice or just want to share a funny story. As a student council senator I would try to do the same. I would strive to always be friendly and kind to all Xaverian students wanting everyone to feel welcome. I would encourage other to join clubs and activities and go on service projects like X-Act and Christmas in the city. Most of all I would want each and every student at Xaverian to feel accepted and to feel excited, knowing that they are each a key part in the larger, greater, Xaverian…

Our Honors in Action awareness campaign addressed what borders and boundaries today's young adults are confronted with and how awareness of bias and self-perception can impact attaining life goals. We found through our research that the boundaries that exist for young adults and youth are not necessarily physical boundaries. We decided to explore these ideas through four phases that included a technology survey with a personal bias activity, a discussion panel on internet safety, a lecture with the topic of overcoming obstacles that we create and that are created for us to overcome, and finally, a book collection for under privileged children.…

I haven’t been involved with ME to WE but I have been included in other community/school events. I went to the ‘YRDSB OUR VOICE: THE WAY FORWARD’ conference. This conference was very beneficial because it was a student-lead conference. It allowed us, students to use our voice and speak up. At the conference, I realized how important it is to use your voice in a positive way to help people. You don’t only need to use your voice; you can get your message out in any way, media, arts or verbally. I learned that student voice is important because, we are the ones who are the future to making our world a better place. When I went back to school, after the conference, I had a tiny activity planned with my class about bullying and speaking up. With my teacher’s permission, I explained the activity to my class and they did the activity. Even though there were 2 months left of school, I could see that my classmates were starting to speak up. Even though I only had an impact on my class, it’s better than nothing.…

Did you know that teens can make a huge difference in our world? Teen activists all have a reason why they began what they did and how they began doing it. Possibly it was because they had a rough past, they’re determined to fix something in our world, or want to help others experiencing the same problem. There are many different ways teen activists begin, but these are just a few.…

Something very important to me in my life is service and that is why throughout my life I also plan to remain involved in the act of helping others in need. Throughout high school I have belonged to a youth group that’s has gone a mission trip every summer, and on these trips I have had some of the most meaningful experiences of my life which have really made me realize how good my life is, and how important it is to share your talents, abilities, and time with others who may not be as fortunate as yourself.…

During my time as the head of committees on the student council and National Honor Society, I’ve planned school dances, intramural activities, clothing and food drives, fundraising parties, and many other events. Utilizing my leadership skills and service experience, I would add to the social environment at Columbia by encouraging students to become more involved in the community and to participate in service that truly helps those in need. I’m an agent for positive change in whatever community I’m in and I anticipate being an active advocate for change in the Columbia community.…

As long as I can remember service to others was always encouraged by my family and teachers. For example, I helped teachers with the intent of lightening their load of work so they can be able to go home earlier. Things like this make me proud because I am able to help others, and to bring a smile to their faces. My excuse to avoid community service was that I always thought that school was all about homework and getting good grades to be on the top 20 of your class. Truth is I have always overlooked this people thinking they were being lazy for not working, but through this community service I learned that each and everyone around the world is fighting their own battles and we all deal with them the best way we can. I am proud of myself because I went to that community service and learned about this people who I had always stereotyped by their actions, community service has encouraged me to actively listen and learn from others, to walk alongside my neighborhood and to build new…

All throughout school I have participated in many clubs and organizations that have not only molded me as a person, but have helped me to develop responsibility, and leadership skills. Currently I am an active member of National Honor Society, and DECA. Both of these organizations, provided by my high school, encourage leadership, volunteer work, and have high expectations for behavior, and grades. Being in National Honor Society has shown me to continually do for others in need. There are always opportunities to get involved with the community, and even create drives for things like stuffed animals, and blankets for children who are sick in the hospital, and “Care Catties” for cancer patients, which include tissues, water bottles, hard candy, and lotion. DECA is another organization I am involved in at Frenship High School. DECA is a business organization for high school marketing students looking to learn, develop and compete in a competitive event. I have been a member since my sophomore…

Through CFJ I have led students in service in multiple service work as we serve those who are marginalized. My service work is a form of unselfish leadership because it is unpaid and requires hard work, intentionality, patience, solidarity, and understanding. In addition, it also requires education as we educate participants who we lead and serve with. Through CFJ, I have served as an Alternative breaks site leader, Lydia's House site leader and served in the X-change program as a site coordinator at Homework club, Evanston, and St. Vincent DePaul. I do all these because it is the universal good of the world as it gives those who we serve joy and happiness as they feel that they are loved in the…

In the past, I have done many activities to help make the world a better place because the world needs to be saved for future generations. I have recycled papers, cans, plastics, and old clothes. I also have walked around my neighborhood and picked up litter on the streets and in the parks. I enjoyed participating in community events such as helping the homeless shelter, animal shelter, and my church. For many years I have helped fundraise from important organizations like Walking For Cancer, Destination Imagination, D.A.R.E., and my volleyball team. I have done many things to help make the world a better place, but I could certainly do more.…

Although, it is a noble duty of each and every citizen of this world to work for bringing unity in diversity, yet I think youths can do much more than others. Young people are more flexible and they have more free time to work on this cause than the seniors can have. Therefore, you people can use their talents to bring their own community under the roof of unity. In my case, it has not been any significant contribution yet. However, I am eagerly waiting to contribute for this. I am looking forward to having the opportunity. I hope that I will get it soon.…
