Essay On Smooth Transition
I have been a Xavier University Smooth Transition (ST) mentor for 3 years since the years of 2014-2016. Smooth Transition is a first-year student summer pre-orientation and year-long peer mentoring program that seeks to support underrepresented domestic and help them transition smoothly to college. Most smooth Transition students are often
African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans. Being a smooth transition requires selflessness as the program unpaid and requires one to dedicate their time to helping another student, as most of the time, the smooth mentors can be the only one that the student can depend on. As a mentor, I have guided first-year students to make good decisions in their college years to succeed in the end. I have also informed my mentees about the leadership and internship opportunities provided at Xavier and advised them to take advantage of those opportunities. As a mentor, I have used my various leadership involvements to guide my mentees to aspire to be good leaders and be inclusive to people of all cultures and backgrounds. I advise them to interact with

Through CFJ I have led students in service in multiple service work as we serve those who are marginalized. My service work is a form of unselfish leadership because it is unpaid and requires hard work, intentionality, patience, solidarity, and understanding. In addition, it also requires education as we educate participants who we lead and serve with. Through CFJ, I have served as an Alternative breaks site leader, Lydia's House site leader and served in the X-change program as a site coordinator at Homework club, Evanston, and St. Vincent DePaul. I do all these because it is the universal good of the world as it gives those who we serve joy and happiness as they feel that they are loved in the

During the course of my high school career, I have developed a strong passion for the organization named the Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). FCCLA is a Career and Technical Student Organization that focuses on building students into better leaders for their families, careers, and communities. Furthermore, FCCLA teaches students practical skills that will be useful throughout their lifetimes. This organization has become an important part of my life because it has shaped me into the leader I am today. I began in the organization as a member and participant in competitive events, I have now worked my way up to being my chapter’s President and the Missouri State First Vice President. My leadership experience in FCCLA, especially my experience as a member of the Missouri State…

The components of citizenship, community service, academics, work and home life, and extracurricular actives help me shine as a well-rounded individual. As an involved and caring citizen in the Union Township community, I do my best to make my mark. Displaying a good role as a citizen through community service has been a value I possessed ever since I could remember. At a young age, I started to serve my community with my parents at both school and church events and it has stuck with me since. Through community service such as being an assistant teacher in St. Veronica’s Religious Education Program, Glen Este High School’s member of National Honors Society, and Key Club, I not only helped out Union Township but I have also made new relationships and feel good about myself. Community service always makes me feel better because I know I’m helping others and making my mark through the friends I have made through both of these service programs.…

Thirty of those fifty service hours are a mandatory aspect of the junior year curriculum and must involve work with either the poor or marginalized. Personally, I chose to complete my necessary hours with the organization Outdoors for All, specifically working with the marginalized. Outdoors for All (OFA) strives to enrich the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities through outdoor recreation by offering programs just as skiing, kayaking, and biking. I participated in their downhill ski program, teaching lessons to people ranging from four to thirty-five years old with a vast array of both mental and physical disabilities. Volunteering with OFA improved not only my teaching skills but my ability to work with all people regardless of their…

This past summer I was part of the leadership staff at Camp Howard. I was a unit director for the 1st and 2nd graders who came to camp for the day. This unit consisted of 30 campers and 4 counselors whom I was in charge of. I am also the treasurer of the College of Democrats and I volunteer with multiple organizations. For example, I help students and community members register to vote and I work closely with the office of Lane County of Democrats. I volunteer with the National Society of Collegiate Scholars by holding toy drives for homeless shelters. Another service experience I've had is volunteering with the Sparrow Club in my hometown. Although it may sound naïve, my leadership as a student on campus, and as a woman in general, demonstrates my motivation to pay it forward. I recognize the opportunities I have as a student leader, and those that I hope to have in the future as a professional. Those include leading and mentoring those yet to come. I hope to cultivate a culture of gratitude, and given my background, I hope it is evident that I am anything but naïve. I understand the challenge it may be, better yet, that is what sparks the fire in me that cannot accept anything short of success.…
