She explained how her joints ached, her muscles were sore, and she taught me that working smarter and harder using your brains will get you further than anything else ever could. Most people are fortunate enough to have two arms and two legs that can lift and work, but not everyone has the desire to learn, and the will to ‘do’. To be honest, I am not sure if my love of learning stemmed from my mother’s encouragement and priority for education. I am sure that without her, I would not be fortunate enough to be pursuing a higher education, but I do think my love affair with learning was inevitable. As I learned English in the first grade, surrounded by no one who spoke my native language of Spanish, I fell in love with language. I grew up admiring books, absorbing every new word I read, and exploring the way each sound formed in my mouth, and that fed my love. Although it may sound naïve, my leadership as a student on campus, and as a woman in general, demonstrates my motivation to pay it forward. I recognize the opportunities I have as a student leader, and those that I hope to have in the future as a professional. Those include leading and mentoring those yet to come. I hope to cultivate a culture of gratitude, and given my background, I hope it is evident that I am anything but naïve. I understand the challenge it may be, better yet, that is what sparks the fire in me that cannot accept anything short of success. I have faced many obstacles, and not only have I overcome them, but I understand the value of these experiences and how they have helped me grow. My parent’s experiences have been the foundation for my perseverance and determination while my personal identity and my own experiences allow me to be open minded and understanding, and my desire to work with and aid those who need it most. I find myself fortunate enough to have found a profession that aligns seamlessly with my passions and values.
