Reflection On The Four Pillars Of National Honor Society
The four pillars of National Honor Society (NHS) are personality traits that separate the mediocre students from the admirable students. This exclusive program comprises members with outstanding scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The pillars of NHS parallels those of the Indiana Association of Student Councils (IASC), inspiration, action, service, and character. As a member of the IASC and NHS, I have integrated these pillars into my personality.
Each pillar is important towards any aspect of success. Scholarship includes reaching one’s maximum potential, not just a commitment to learning. Leadership is characterized by the ability to inspire others, act accordingly, complete community service, and display an ambitious nature. Service involves the

Never did I know how much I would learn from service projects. Never did I know how much my personality would change. When my cross country coach handed me the Knight of Honor award, he said my “greatest strength is my work ethic.” This perseverance has helped lead to the success of my most life-changing service project, my Eagle Scout project.
My Eagle service project was to install a series of tree identification stands in proximity to the plethora of trees around Kendallville’s Bixler Lake Park. The identification stands make hiking trips, camping, and walking more informative and educational. This project tested my leadership skills and experiences which display my knowledge through the years as a scout and as a student.
This project has taught me scholarship, service, and leadership, and this has truly changed my character. The rank of Eagle Scouts represents a young man’s dedication to learning, his time for the community, and his ability to lead. This Scouting journey has taught me a myriad of skills, wisdom, and knowledge that cannot be expressed in words. This experience has helped shape me into the dexterous person I am

Every year the camp brought in a great group of girls. Having been chosen for officer positions and a starguider among those girls truly made it an honor. I value being highly regarded for my leadership in a place I love so much. Every year as I returned home from camp I tried to keep the same mind set as I had there, one of leadership. This is when I discovered that I did not need a title to be a leader. I could be a leader in everyday life by my…

Last summer, I endeavored a life changing experience. American Legion Buckeye Boys State is a leadership program. It is the best Boys State program in the nation. On top of this, it is among the top programs for leadership, growth, and is a meeting of the greatest minds of Ohio, and by proxy, of the nation. But it’s so much more than that. From Day One, the minute you step off the bus, it instantly becomes an incredible experience. Everyone, people who have never even met before, are shaking everyone else’s hands, introducing themselves, and campaigning for positions before anyone has even dropped their luggage off. It was breathtaking, truly, and it made me realize that I too had to step up. Naturally, I did just that. I started meeting people,…

They have not only embodied who I strive to be, but have helped me achieve success and impact throughout my local community and my time as a national honor society member. Scholarship has helped me define not only who I am as a student, but has helped me prepare for my future. Without my drive to maintain my academics and pursue knowledge, I would not have discovered my love and passion for teaching. This newly discovered passion has helped me narrow down my future career, special education. Service, has helped me develop one of my individual characteristics, as I now understand the importance…

“The hardest obstacle to overcome in any leadership position is getting past the apathy to get people involved in the process to get things done…The greatest enemy to accomplishment is apathy” (Burke). National Honor Society upholds its members to have 4 important values. These being scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Leadership, in my opinion, is a very important aspect in National Honors Society because you are expected to be a role model by positively inspiring people around you. This quote stuck out because it says that inspiring people is a way to overcome obstacles in leadership. If you inspire people and make them get rid of their apathy, you can overcome stalling in the process and reach accomplishment.…

Personally, I have been involved in my community since I was in the Boy Scouts of America. As I acsended through to the top rank of Boy Scouts known as an Eagle Scout, many projects were conducted. For example, I have planned and conducted my own Eagle Scout project in 2009; this project consisted of building a roof for my local firehouse. Other community service includes roadside clean-ups, annual earth day events, and fellow Eagle Scout projects. Since my community college career, I have been well involved with our campus and community. Particularly in Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society of all community colleges, where I have become the President of our chapter. As an executive officer in Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, each individual is responsible for a legacy project during the school year. I was responsible for SOS Children’s Village which is a foster care neighborhood that houses children that were abused, neglected and/or abandoned. Even though this was a one-day experience, I was thrilled about the opportunity to work with children as I believe that no child should be denied proper medical care and a healthy home. It is said that time goes by when you are having fun. This was true for our experience as we went four hours over time. I coordinated leadership and team building activities for the children in which both the volunteers and participants enjoyed. Who knew that in five hours’ strong bonds can be developed with a stranger that you might not encounter again.…
