Define Expository Texts:
Expository writings are texts (non-fiction) that are used to explain, describe, give information, or inform the readers. The texts will be about a specific topic which provides true facts. It is organized and has visual information that gives a better idea about the topic to the reader.
Types of Expository Texts:
There are five main types of expository texts:
They are descriptive texts, Sequence/ how to texts, Cause and effect texts, Problem and Solutions texts and compare & contrast texts. Descriptive texts is when the author expresses on a topic by giving examples, features, and characteristics.
Sequence or how to texts are instructions given (step by step) on something. An instruction manual to build a product or a recipe will be a common example. Cause and effect texts are expository texts where the author talks about 2 different things, and the cause and effect of these. This helps us readers to have a better idea about certain topics, including the negatives and the positives.
Problem and solution texts can be identified when the author represents a problem that’s currently occurring, and also lists the solutions for this problem in the same texts.
The last one, which is the compare and contrast expository texts are when the author tries to persuade us by explaining the difference and similarities of 2 things.
Their purpose:
They are informative, you will learn something new when you read.
They could also instruct you
It explains and analyse information by presenting ideas
Target Audiences The target audience for expository texts are everyone. Everyone can read expository texts and it will be informative for each and every one of them. Even though there are different types of expository texts, none of them are specifically aimed towards anyone. A person could read all sort of expository texts. A father could read a recipe book while a teenage girl will be reading a compare and contrast expository feature
