Ten Thousand Hours By Malcolm Gladwell

When we think of ten thousand hours our first thought is probably like whoa, that is a lot of time. Right? Ten thousand hours, to put it in an easier perspective is equivalent to around four hundred and seventeen days which is a lot of time to do one thing and that is 24/7. Now imagine putting in ten thousand hours into one field of work. An average work day for someone who is a teenager to young adult is around 5 hours because they still have to go to school as well. If he or she worked five hours a day every single day not including vacations or weekends it would take he or she over five and a half years to become an expert in his or hers career choice by Malcolm Gladwell’s standards. But I do not agree with that because you cannot gauge every persons ability’s by a standard, ten thousand hours is a farfetched idea. I believe it does take time and practice to become skilled in one thing but I also believe that everyone learns and gains experience very differently.
Gladwell’s idea of the ten thousand hour rule is inaccurate because there are some things that a person could do and become an expert in a week, but there is also situations when a person could try for 20 years to become an expert at something and never truly understand it. When I was in eighth grade going to the ninth grade I decided to quit choir even though I was a good singer and I had put around four to five years into singing I realized that I really hadn’t made any noticeable progress from when I started to sing four or five years later. That is a great example of how a person can put a large amount of time into one thing and not excelling in the end.
