Terrorist
The word “terrorist” is a noun that means any person who uses violent and intimidating methods to achieve a goal. The origin of this word dated back during the French revolution where people used intimidation against the government to achieve democracy and equality. It was derived from the Latin word “terreo” which means “fear.” Terrorist uses many different tactics like car bombing, hijackings, and explosions to emphasize their purpose. There are many different types of terrorist and we can separate them into different categories which may include state terrorist, bioterrorist, cyber terrorist, and more. The use of the word “terrorist” is commonly used as a derogatory term, …show more content…
but has changed because the dramatic events we have seen throughout history. Let’s look at how some sources classify the word terrorist.
We see the book definition in Oxford English definition as “a person who uses terrorism in the pursuit of political aims.” In order to define terrorist, you have to understand that terrorism is an act of instilling fear. This doesn’t mean Billy who stole your orange juice in middle school is a terrorist. In the view of the FBI, it is defined as “the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives” (28 C.F.R. Section 0.85).” This means terrorist activity can occur within the nation and the American citizens can also become a terrorist if they perform such acts. In their eyes, it is either classified as domestic or international. Terrorism within …show more content…

Mac 2 states is considered domestic and international is anything outside the U.S. soil. We cannot really define the true definition of a terrorist, but we can create an understandable theory of it. They are not limited to just typical explosions and murder of innocents we see today. The words meaning changes in depending on how one view such word. One may say they are the worst kind of people and the other may say they are necessary sacrifices for freedom.
Throughout history, there have been attacks several or more attacks on U.S.
soil that we may recall. The infamous September 11th 2001 was the terrorist attack that changed our nation forever. It was 8:13 AM on Tuesday morning where we first lost communications with American Airlines Flight 11. Boston flight control confirms that there is a high jacking on the airline and reports to nearby air control centers. 8:46 AM Flight 11 crashes into world trade center between floors 93 and 99. Seventeen minutes later, at 9:03, United Airlines Flight 175 crashes into the other side of the World Trade Center ripping the building to pieces. Employees above the crash are sitting ducks as flaming fuels from the jets burn them alive and impenetrable smoke engulfs the entire building. Citizens of New York City flees under any object they can find as large debris fall from the twin towers. Terrorist in all the planes were killed along with the entire flight. Since this horrific event, our policies against war on terrorism have changed, security measures have been tightened, and the terrorism have inflicted our nation deeply. We now label any such terrorist activity as a primary threat to the United States. The meaning of terrorist forever change since this
day.
In my experiences, I have sought to support the war on terrorism by joining the Department of Defense. I enlisted in the Navy in 2008. Around the spring of 2011, civil war had broken out in Libya. Freedom fighters and rebels sought to overthrow their current leader.

Gaddafi responded by killing anyone who opposed him in order to install fear including innocents. During Operation Odyssey Dawn, I was part of the crew which supported the downfall of Gaddafi reign of terror. It was at the day of March 19th 2011, my ship USS Barry was dispatched to Mediterranean Sea to support the civil war in Libya. I remember it was around four in the afternoon and I had just got off watch. I knew something serious was going down as I heard higher ranking officers discussing joint operations with NATO to destroy their air defenses. Tensions between the crew were building up and we were all excited to finally act. Three hours later, my ship was ordered to destroy Libya’s SAM sites, which stands for Surface to Air Missiles with our Tomahawk cruise missiles. It was about 8 pm where USS Barry fired over fifty missiles at their missile sites along with two other vessels. That day, I felt very proud to be a part of the crew which helped bring down terrorist leader Gaddafi. The two most famous terrorist organizations like the Taliban and Al Qaeda which are known for memorable acts of violence in history, gives us an example on what true terrorist motives may look like. They both seek similar goals and have common ideology. I am not agreeing with their methods at all, but if I just put myself in their shoes for a day, I can understand a little bit of why they do such things. They objectives definitely succeed in changing our policies. Let’s look at the crisis during Kuwait, where U.S. forces helped the country defend themselves against Iraq. Who do you think are the bad guys in this situation? Supporters of Saddam Hussein would probably agree that we the United States are being the bullies. U.S. supporters think Saddam is the terrorist, but this is the reason why the word terrorist is really hard to define. It is very unique in nature and there cannot be just one general definition.

Terrorist organizations remains a serious threat to this day and is one of the greatest challenges the U.S. faces today. It isn’t just Americans who are worried about it, but every country in the world can be affected. Well doesn’t this mean that freedom fighters and rebels whose mission is to overthrow the government a terrorist? The answer is a yes according to the definition by the book. The people are clearly trying to use violence against their own government to bring about a new one. Both sides in my opinion are trying to pursue a political agenda. The government wants to scare the rebels by killing anyone in its path and the rebels just want to get rid of the leader in order to bring change. This is why we can really define the true definition and is pretty much impossible. There is too many outputs that can change the meaning of this word “terrorist.” So who really is labeled as one?
