week will cause one to be more productive when it does the opposite, creates a burnout. If given the choice, most workers would opt in for a four-day work week. With the changes in the workforce, with millennials entering in they need more flexibility of when and where they can work. As a result, companies are offering the flexibility of a four-day workweek which makes this generation of workers easier to please. In an op-ed for the New York Times, Jason Fried, owner of a software company states “When there’s less time to work, you waste less time. When you have a compressed workweek, you tend to focus on what’s important. Constraining time encourages quality time. Another reason is that employees will be happier. A reduced work week gives them the freedom to spend time with family. Pursing hobbies, attending your child’s school activities & engaging with the community. These are all things that boost employee’s personal happiness and keeps them sane, focused and committed to their jobs. In addition, the extra day off employees have the time to handle personal obligations such as visiting the doctor or getting that eye exam. One extra day off would help manage those things that cannot be done on the weekends. Families with children would see a reduction in child care costs in addition to being able to spend more time with their families. People would have time to spend with friends that they care about instead of forming fake friendships with their co-workers. This would make employees healthier both physically and mentally. Happy employees’ can save companies a good sum of money in the long term. Working less hours helps one to move away from living the current path of living to work, working to earn and earning to consume. The most significant reason is this creates a healthier work environment.
After a three-day weekend, one tends to come back, relaxed and mentally prepared for the work. Taking a mini get-away from life is doable in three days and worth it. And, a change of scenery makes an enormous difference on people’s mental wellbeing. Giving them added time to exercise, can reduce stress and improve the overall well-being. Working longer doesn’t always mean working better, happy employees who work shorter workweeks are more productive than stressed employees who work overtime. There are two major benefits that should be addressed efficiency and work-life balance. After a long weekend employees’ come back to work and get to work. Everyone will work quickly and effectively because of the ability to have Friday off. Much less time is wasted on unnecessary chatter, fewer people are late and meetings run more efficiently. Having that extra day off would help us all with a better way of life, giving us the time to cultivate relationships with family and friends.
In the new workforce, things have changed. Technology demands that companies look to more creative ways to keep and maintain happy, well balanced and productive employees. One of the best ways is the allow more flexibility with their work schedule. The new generation seems to thrive on longer days, with the reward of a shorter work
week.
