Not only do the traditions differ, but so does the food. Some have an enormous feast with an entire turkey, a heaping bowl of mashed potatoes, a filled to the rim gravy boat, and endless choices for dessert. Others may only have a pizza and a soft drink with a close family member. Even our ancestors had a feast of goose, bread,
and deer. They would sit together with the food on the table, like most today, but instead of moving around and tasting everything they had to eat what was closest to them. The better food was placed near the more prosperous people of a higher status.
When it is time for the family to cluster together, some do not wish to unite with the entire bundle of family and friends. Like my family, we each have separate small parties with immediate family. Some don't visit at all and instead, they sit at home and have a day to themselves. Other families may have one massive party with all their friends and family, excluding no one. Our ancestors were the ones that all the people they could muster got together and there was a celebration with food and friends.
Festivities can vary from family to family, sometimes having a gargantuan ceremony is just not fathomable. My family does gather together and make christmas lists, because I do not go to these celebrations, I get to stay home and sleep all day. I go black friday shopping but our ancestors certainly did not have black friday sales. Instead they went hunting for their food in the morning, and then spent all day preparing it to be edible. Now we have seasonings and spices of the table for everyone, before generations did not include pepper on the table, only salt
Since there are so many variables that have changed and altered our holidays, of course one of the things that were changes were the food. Some of the traditions that were around in the 1800’s are not around today, but some have stayed. We still respect these old habits by remembering what they did for us and learning about it in school.
