The Absinthe Drinker is an oil painting made in 1876 by Edgar Degas. It is 36in by 26 in. The colors were dull to give a certain feel to the scene. The Absinthe Drinker shows a woman sitting at a table with a glass of absinthe in front of her. Her eyes look full of sadness and perhaps despair. A scruffy nearby man, who is smoking a pipe, rests his elbow on her table. The woman seems to be in her own world as she ignores the man. In the second half of the 19th century, cafes were a popular and important meeting place for all sorts of artists. The Café de la Nouvelle Athène, was a cafe in Paris, France. It is known for being a meeting place for impressionist painters (including Van Gogh and Degas). It is also known for the place where Degas
