The Barbary wars were a set of conflicts between the United States and several of the Muslim nations on the coast of North Africa in the 1800's. The North African countries on the coast were involved in piracy on the open seas against merchant shipping. The piracy against American shipping continued until the U.S. gained the military and naval strength to protect American-flagged ships.
The First Barbary War
The first Barbary War was also known as the Tripolitanian War. This war lasted from 1801 to 1805, and was considered by many, to be America's first "foreign war.

Unlike the first Barbary war, this was a fairly short conflict in 1815 against the Barbary State of Algiers. War was declared on the United States for failing to pay its required tribute.
After succeeding in the First Barbary War, The United States began to focus on its terrible relationship with France and the United Kingdom. The Barbary pirate states took this opportunity while the US was distracted, to return to their practice of attacking American merchant vessels in the Mediterranean Sea and holding their crews and officers for ransom. The United States was unable to devote military resources to the the situation, so they quietly paid ransom for return of the prisoners. At the conclusion of the War of 1812, however, America could once again focus on North Africa. On March 3, 1815, the US Congress authorized deployment of naval power against Algiers, and a force of ten ships was dispatched. Bainbridge’s command was still assembling, and did not depart until July 1, thereby missing the military and diplomatic initiatives which Decatur swiftly and decisively handled. Unlike after the First Barbary war, in which the European nations were engaged in warfare with one another (and with the US to a British extent) there was no general European war after the Second Barbary War.
