In the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the Capulets and Montagues long-standing feud had a greater effect on their children’s behavior, rather than the nature of their own growing and developing brains. In the beginning of the play, when the first quarrel occurs, Tybalt says “As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee: Have at thee coward!’ (Shakespeare Mid-1590s). This “hate” that Tybalt and the rest of the characters have, have this belief engraved into their minds since they were taught this within their households. However, they have no particular reasons of their own for this hatred, and because they were raised with this belief, it causes their behavior to even act more immaturely and have their actions riskier, as “what motivates one teenager to take…

The central idea of act one, scene five of Romeo and Juliet is that things change. One example of that would be when Tybalt is complaining about Romeo being at the party. Instead of kicking Romeo out, Lord Capulet allows him to stay. By allowing him to stay, the audience can see a dynamic shift in the hatred between Capulet’s and Montague’s. A prime example, probably one of the most important, is when Juliet says, “That I must love a loathed enemy” (Shakespeare 1.5.155). By stating this, she displays her predicament of loving Romeo instead of the hatred she is assumed to accept. The phrase “must love” grants the image of a love that cannot go away and has to happen. Instead of saying “hate” to describe how she is meant to feel, she says “loathed”…

“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams” – Dr. Seuss. This quote explains how love can possess you, sometimes in a way that causes powerful devotion. Other times it may cause a malignant insanity. In recent discussions of love and hate, a controversial issue has been presented: can true love conquer all adversity? On one hand, some argue that love has its limitation. From this perspective, many will claim that familial love cannot conquer a violent home with a violent father. On the other hand, however, others argue that love can conquer any obstacle that appears in a relationship, whether material or natural. In the words of one of this view’s main proponents, “Come live with me and be my love, and we will all the pleasures prove that valleys, groves, hills, and fields, woods, or steepy mountain yields (Marlowe 777).” According to this view, love is enough to move mountains. In sum, this issue is whether love can conquer all adversity or if love has its limitations that cannot be overcome.…

In Charles Dickens’ novel, A Tale of Two Cities, he illustrates the constant battle between love and hate. This battle is never-ending, but in the novel, I believe that love won, and that love is greater than hate. Love is displayed as love for family and friends, while hate is displayed as hate for the aristocrats and revenge. Lucie, a young girl who never met her father, grows into a strong woman and her love for her family is evident. Her love even saved her father from his despair. Miss Pross has love for Lucie, affectionately called Ladybird, and cares for her and her daughter, little Lucie, with her life. However, there is also hate. Madame Defarge hates the aristocrats, mostly the Evrémondes, and will go to any length to see them suffer. Sydney Carton hates everyone and hates life in general. Can love overpower these emotions; will love prove it is greater? In Dickens’ novel, it did.…

Love and hate are closely related. You can love someone so much that you end up hating them, or you can “hate” someone but end up loving them. An example of the relationship of love and hate can be seen in “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” by Raymond Carver. Carver states, “Terry said the man she lived with before she lived with Mel loved her so much he tried to kill her” (876). Typically, someone would want to kill someone else because that person hated the other person, not because they loved them.…

Love can force to take a path of violence and at many cases nothing else will matter but your love; you would choose love over many things. This was clearly evident in Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”. Love has no boundaries and it can overtake all the other emotions and loyalties towards families and friends. Romeo and Juliet are ready to fight against their laws and their society for their love which is clear from these lines of the play, “Deny thy father and refuse thy name,” (2.2.34) Juliet asks, “Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet” (2.2.36). Juliet says “If all else fail, myself have power to die” (3.5.242).…
